How would downshifting break a transmission? That is how they are designed to operate after all...
Not so unless you are comparing a 12-year-old V10 with a new 6.0L V8. From 2000-2005, which were the years the Excursion was produced, the 6.0L Vortec made 300 HP.
so that got out of hand quickly haha. well, another question. I found a nice one but the interior leather is cut up in the front seats but its a grand cheaper than other ones comparably because of it. Is there a place to buy leather seats? (ie if its less than a grand its worth it, or even if a little more)
Do you have a link to the ad listing it for sale, pictures? If so post it, lots of good advice to be gained here from people who have been there done that and can tell you what to look for tomorrow when you go look at it drive it.
Try going up to the owner after looking at the truck with the amount he is asking for in cash. But leave 1000 of it in another spot in the vehicle you go there in or with a friend that goes with you. If you flash cash even if it is lower then the asking price they usually go for it. You can act like you are borrowing the rest if they wont go that low. I did that with mine and told her I was trying to do this without getting a loan. She asked what I had and I told her $12500 (asking was $13500) so she told me to keep $500. Walked out paying $1500 less then asking.
And a lot of things are made for normal abuse in fact most things are. Which is why towing is much harder on the trans.
10 more hp but 50 less torque... I'd prefer my 310hp/420tq over its 320hp/365tq...
The major difference (in my area anyways) is you can get a Suburban for much cheaper than an Ex. Forget about getting a V10 for less then $8k unless it's a compete pile... Subs though you can get for $2-4k in the same year range (early 2000) in comparable condition.
Not sure if this has to do with the fact that the Subs for sale outnumber the Exs for sale 20:1...

Yes it is supply and demand and I agree about the torque. I think Ex's will go up in value since the people that like them really like them even though it is a niche market.
