History Channel had a series a few weeks back called "The Men Who Built America" and in part 4 (or was it 5?) they touched on that race...it was also the first time I'd ever heard of it.
Sha-ZAM! That's gorgeous, Sean! What do you use to polish parts?
That's the nicest it's looked since I've had it, and it was in good shape then! Now it's GREAT!
Was the check valve stuck? I am wondering why the font didn't hold pressure.
I agree that it played good as long as it was pumped up, but as soon as it started losing high-pressure, the mantles "flickered", and would eventually go dim until a few more pumps.
How crudded was that font inside? That's what I thought may have fouled the check. Did the fill neck sealing surface clean up OK, or was it already?
My polish recipe is a soak in vinegar followed by 0000 steel wool rub. I love the look of polished brass (for some reason it speaks to me).
The check valve looked great as did the inside of the font - not a clean as the H, but pretty dang rust free.
The rusty crud around the filler neck didn't look as bad as some I've seen. I'd have to dip that neck in rust remover to clean it up and then would lose some of the original paint, so I didn't mess with it. The cap gasket looked new, so i'll check it out again after reassembling. When I lit it up before disassembly, the only thing I noticed was a little hole in the mantle - but I only ran it for 15 mins and it held pressure (will give it a longer test this weekend. The globe frame cleaned up nicely with a little evap-o-rust.
Sean - What do these sell for after you rebuild them? I currently have a modern one that runs on propane, but wouldn't mind having one that ran on liquid fuel as well. Would rather buy a rebuilt one from you than a new one. May not be an immediate purchase, but am definitely interested.
