MPG reduction... any ideas

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction or give me ideas to check. Vehicle is 2006 4WD CC short bed, 123K on the odo and completly stock except for 4" turbo back exhaust, muffler still in. What I have noticed is a somewhat sever increase in fuel consumption, calculated with receipts and calculator, not lie-o-meter. Last year I would average 15 in town and 13 towing my 8K trailer. Now I am exeriencing 13 in town and 10 with the trailer. All travel is still the same and trailer pulling is always to the same location. Driving habbits still the same. Truck has plenty of power and starts up in an instant, hot or cold. Transmission shifts fine and temp runs about 165 towing. EOC is 195-205 and EOT spread is about 5 degrees above ECT. No fuel smell in the oil, FP is 68, not making oil either. No smoke of any color at start or driving. Im just concerned that something is going wrong since the drop seems so severe. Oh and BTW, no codes or check engine. Have the AE software and nothing comes up. Also FICM was to Ed this year for repair 47.5V all the time now. Baffled since the truck runs so well, except for the fuel change.

I have been fighting this same thing with a friend. I am just about to blame injectors for lack of better answers.

First is to make sure tire pressure is at max and that you aren't in 4x4 by accident.

All I can say is make sure your sensors are functioning (EBP, MAP - compare w/ baro; also check the ICP and IPR duty cycle). Keep an eye on fuel pressure and inspect the fuel filters closely (and the appearance of the water drained from the separator).

Also - pull the EGR valve and see what it looks like.

I will check that out. I know it is in 2wd, because I use the 4wd weekends at the boat ramp and can tell by the first "turn" if I have left it in 4 wheel. I too am for ready to blame injectors, for the better part of not being able to pinpoint anything that is wrong any place else. I have some stiction issue, but 5-40 syn has helped a lot so I cant see that as being the reason behind the drastic change, besides that has been the same since I bought it 3 years ago. The EGR I pull when I do my oil changes and it is always bone dry except for the light dusting (the truck idles very little)
Thanks for the advice and I will let you know what if anything I find.

MPG reduction was the first symptom I noticed on my truck. Next I noticed it ran better (performance wise) towing something compared to running empty. Do you hear the turbo spool (or whistle) like you did when it was new? Another thing I noticed is when shutting the truck off. I used to hear the turbo "spool down" for 30-45 seconds when it was new.
My truck had no codes, no pending codes, and sensors reporting correctly. How does your truck run by itself? Can you still feel the acceleration accompanied by the turbo "whistle"? Depending how you answer the above it may be time to "refreshen" the turbo. Just some thoughts to keep in mind. Let us know what you find.

You might also check to see if you have a caliper dragging. It wouldn't be the first time that has happened.

Fordharley,
Thats for the ideas. I still feel the same power that I did, the turbo whistles and has no problem boosting up. When I shut down I can hear the turbo quietly spooling down. I usually always let it cool to under 300 degrees before I shut down, so the spooling is quiet, yet there. I have not noticed any difference in power between unloaded and loaded, other than towing it obviously takes longer to get rolling up to speed because of the weight. Its just that the MPG suck worse than normal. I have checked all the CAC hoses and intercooler for leaks, and even replaced the air cleaner (factor design) just in case the filter minder was bad. All filter fuel & oil (OEM) are less than 1000 miles. Never any water in the fuel drain and filters get changed at 3500 oil and 7500 fuel. Yes maybe over maintained, but $100 oil change cheaper than $220 injector.

Cheezit,
Thanks. The truck was reflashed two years ago, but it has not been to the dealer or any outside repair facility since then. The change had been happening slowly at first noticed a 1/10 hear and there, but seems like the last few months it has accelerated in its decline.

I was going to ask if you used a Cetane Booster like Power Service. Sounds like you have covered the bases.

How old are your batteries? Battery voltage?
