No power while towing 5th wheel

I have been reading this forum since i bought my 06 f250 powerstroke last summer theres lots of good information.

I felt all winter something was not correct with the power on my truck. I read that its hard to spin the tires without brake standing but i couldn't even spin the tires in the rain. I have been getting 11-12 miles mpg which i blamed on winter fuel. I picked up my trailer today which weighs about 7000lbs i couldn't get past 60 mph on a medium grade hill.

I don't have any other symptoms either. I get white smoke on morning starts but it goes away 5minutes later. My truck starts fine no stumbling or black smoke or funny sounds. My turbo seems fine it maxs out at about 26-27 and seems to spool normally a bit slow maybe. My truck is totally stock with 40000km on it. I changed the fuel filters at 35000 and i change the oil every 5000km as recommended. I have no check engine light either.

I have made an appointment with my ford dealer but i like to hear from the great people here too.

You should change your fuel filters at 10,000 miles when towing a lot. The manual says change at 15,000 normally.

Your issues sound like plugged EGR valve / system, but could be injectors, turbo, etc. Do you have any DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)? Let us know what the dealership says.

The only thing I can tell you(without knowing more, it could be alot of things although I'm leaning toward the EGR system as it has been known to cause lack of power when clogged up) is that you could still have codes and not throw a CEL(another reason why the dash cluster does squat to help the driver) and I would imagine that there is a code somewhere(may not be able to pull it without Ford's type of code readers) with the problem that you were having.

Sounds to me like if you are getting a range of boost up to 27 psi, your turbo is ok. This puts me on the EGR as your culprit. Ifyou take it to the dealer, make sure they give you all the codes and then you can research them here. I bet removal and cleaning of the EGR is all that is required.

the scheduled maintenance is now 7500 Km for oil changes, 15,000 Km for fuel filters. This is recomended heavy use for towing ect. I would consider synthetic oil if I were you. Changing oil at 5000 km is probably a waste unless its ALL heavy towing. (I mean > 12,000 lbs) 7000 lbs is not even a workout.

One thing the dealer should try is making sure your computer updates are complete and doing a full relearn after fixing the EGR or atleast checking it out....

Where are you, your profile is not filled out, would be curious your dealership experiences in Canada...(assume since you ref Km).

For severe service (heavy towing) Ford recommends a 10,000 mile change interval for fuel filters:

(from a past post) .......................

I knew I had read somewhere that Ford not only defined severe operating conditions for oil service, but fuel service also. I found it at Ford Doctors Diesel Technicion Society (FDDTS) The link is below, along w/ the verbiage.

http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-06-04.php

Here is the official Ford Technician guideline
If the vehicle is being used in "Normal Service" the oil and oil filter should be changed every 7,500 miles. The recommend fuel filter change interval is 15,000. If the vehicle is being used in "Severe Operating Conditions", the oil and oil filter should be changed every 5,000 or 200 hours of engine operation whichever comes first. Under "Severe Operating Conditions", the fuel filters should be changed every other oil change, 10,000 miles or 400 hours of engine operation whichever comes first.

Severe operating conditions as defined by Ford
  • Towing a trailer or using a camper or car-top carrier
  • Extensive Idling and /or low-speed driving for long distances as in heavy commercial use such as delivery, taxi, patrol, or livery
  • Operating in dusty conditions such as unpaved or dusty roads
  • Off-road operation
  • Use of BioDiesel, up to and including 5% BioDiesel (B5)
  • Short trip in cold operating conditions

My 04 6.0 3.73 gears pulls my 35 footer at 11000 lbs with ease. It is stock. His load should be no problem.

No Power also

This thread is pretty interesting.

I had trouble last week towing my race trailer. 05 Dually 34,700 miles, fuel filter change just before I left for VA. Everything was normal going up one of the hills, near Beckley WV. When I left a toll booth I headed up and over one hill the second one power seemed to drop, I pulled over as it slowed more. I kicked it in Netural and the engine died. The engine turns over fine but will not fire.

I had the truck and trailer towed in, the Ford dealer is so stacked up with work I will not know until later this week.

My truck is 100% stock. I thought filters and fluids were changed pretty often although don't think it was exactly 10K but fairly close.

The talk about fuel pumps and oil problems is working on me.

Pulling about 9500 pounds

Bismic, my quotes for maintenance are in Km (Kilometres) and yours are in miles. 5000 mile = approx 7500 Km for oil changes, 15,000 Km = approx 10000 miles for Fuel filters. These are quotes from my dealer because they have not updates my manuals nor their call systems...

Still sounds like EGR. Do you use an injector cleaner and what weight of oil are you using in the winter months?

Based on comments from Techs that frequent this forum, they no longer clean the EGR, just replace it.

Gotta agree with mhoefer, the boost sounds ok so replacing the EGR valve would be logical. It's a pesky barnacle when it malfunctions in the 6.0!

I can tell ya the other day I cleaned my EGR and knocked out some of the caked up carbon (that i could get at) in the intake elbow area(also took the elbow off).. what a different it made.. I don't know that it increased my power, but it runs smoother now..

Lost Power 6.0

Update
The WV dealer called today my 05 Dually 6.0 has HPOP leak. Thanks to Tex25025 and BISMIC I had a strong hunch that was the problem. They are going to do the TSB that BISMIC reference in his great work on Technical references.

Thanks for the reply s. I got my truck back yesterday and the ford tech re flashed my truck with the latest flash and told me to try it out for a couple days. He also felt the truck seemed ok to him on power. I must say i notice a big difference in mid range and cold startup the truck seems to run smoother than before. I am going to clean my egr valve this weekend anyways and hopefully the next time i tow i will see and improvement.
