What exactly does a truck do when it’s defueling? I’m asking because I experienced something with mine yesterday for the first time. Towing a travel trailer (approx. 7K lbs). Well my temps are up high and I know it’s supposed to Defuel a little over 220Ect I believe. Well the trip was a little over an hour on relatively flat ground and ECT stayed in the 214-220 range. Once went to 222. Stopped for lunch then continue for the remainder of the trip which was about 20min. When the temps got about 218-220 I started hearing a quick sound of air (puff) that can best be described as air blowing back through the air filter. I don’t assume it was a turbo fart because I was holding a steady speed. This never effected power or RPM but every time I heard the noise I got a puff of black smoke out the exhaust. Is this the natural defueling process or is there some other issue. Just curious why it only did it after a brief stop when it had been hotter at times on the first leg of the trip.
Defueling is the system cutting the duration of the injector pules with.
So with shorter pulse width you get less fuel. As I recall defueling will give the wrench light
When was the last time you checked the EGR valve? Might be time for a cleaning.
Any codes from the trip?
One of the others will likely have better ideas on what was going on.
How was the turbo acting on the trip?
