today i was going to do an oil change so i started the ex, let it warm up about 10 mins or so. shut it down, got all the oil change essentials ready touched the top of the alternator to just see how warm it was and damn....too hot to touch. i could easily put my hand on the tube next to it and not feel that much heat. all the voltages on ficm, fvp, flp were all normal range, so i am wondering is this a symptom of it starting to go out again and am thinking maybe an idler pulley. any thoughts?
Mine got very hot last time I did a short run and happened to
put my hand on it. Like you I did not run for very long. This is
one of the reasons that the air director is there to force air from
the fan over the alt to help to cool it. You should be OK.
Like Mark I will also check the temp after a 5 to 10 min run
starting at ambient temp and post what I get.
Ok here is what I got.
72F before start
After 2 min it was getting warm 114F at 5 min I got 140F . I scanned the probe
over the alt after the 5 min and the peek temp was 177F
deep inside the windings.
So they do heat up fast.
Hope this helps.
