Alternator get hot

alternator and batteries are testing good. When running the engine the alternator gets very hot. We were told the factory charging wire had too much resistance so we by passed the original charging wire with a new 6 gauge charging wire and alternator still gets hot. any help is greatly appreciated

If it gets really hot with a cold engine that would suggest a problem. Even with a hot engine you should be able to place your hand on it. Might have trouble putting out enough to keep up and is running full out or could be bad bearings. Might be a good idea to have a spare handy.

It is getting ready to die a painful death. I just changed the one on my neighbors 7.3 PS, and it took me all of about 15 minutes. $189 at Advance Auto....

put a multi meter on it and see how much it's putting out.

Hot alternator = working way to hard (bad battery, cable or electrical component such as compressor, electric fan, radio, etc.)
