Hot Alternator
Alternator was replaced approx 1 year ago after it stopped charging. This last week I smelled a hot electrical type smell and opened up the hood and it was coming from the alternator. Alternator is very hot to the touch when running. Batteries are fully charged so it is not that the alt is working hard to charge. Volts at battery after gpr shuts down is approx 13.8V so it is still charging but I question the life if it is running this hot.
Any comments or similar experience. I live in a very small town so no access to anyone who may be a rebuilder of alternators. My thought is to change it soon to avoid possible failure in a bad spot.

If my math serves me, the alternator when charging will produce 14vdc x 160amp=2240 watts of power, that's a lot of heat dissipated! If you might want to see what is demanding that kind of load. A bad (shorted cell) battery will draw a lot of power, i would start with testing each battery.
