Nice to see you getting it running and actually somewhat mobile; it's always a great experience. I like the idea of using (2) temp gauges; I've been debating on setting up a set for my own beast.
Well, had it running again today after retorqueing the heads again. Also tested the charging system to find that it wasn't doing anything. Had to clean some paint off the firewall where the voltage regulator attaches. Have good contact between the firewall and the grounding plate of the regulator now, puts out about 6.5 volts at the battery when running. Also attached a ground strap from the motor to the firewall. One more run left to retorque heads then change oil and should be good to go. Just have to get it all dialed in to run better. Got he gas tank and seat bottom reattached ot the floor but still need to hook up the fuel line. Also took apart the original vacuum operated wiper motor as it was gummed up inside pretty good. got it all cleaned up and regreased the inside and it appears to be working if you suck on it like a straw.
What I did to my vac wipers was essentially what you did; clean them up and grease em good. To test them I hooked up a vacuum pump and rigged it to pull a steady 17in. Worked perfect.
Have the hood back on with the center trim in place. put a bead of silicone under the trim in the seam where to 2 halves of the hood meets to prevent water from getting down onto the air cleaner. Got the cowl vent and cover reinstalled and working nicely. new rear window and seal is in place. also installed a new headliner/cab interior and wind-lace. got the lower door seals installed on the rocker panels, that took forever. refurbished the seat cushions and put on new upholstery.
Will take more pics to show the progress that's going on.
Pic #1 showing horn reinstalled and wired which works ok with 6 volts but definitely better on 12 volts , hood trim in place, acorn nut covers on heads, and new windshield installed awaiting new division bar, and new wiper from napa.
Pic #2 showing more acorn nut covers.
Pics #3-5 showing full new interior installed.
doors are almost done being painted and clear coated, ran out of clear coat so have to pick more up this week. also swapped out the temporary 2" flex pipe exhaust with 1-3/4" flex pipe that fits over the headers tighter as they are 1-3/4" OD.
Quick and easy model 91-99 carb modification for installing newer power valves. Take carb apart into its 3 main pieces, remove old style power valve and try to install newer one. You should notice that as you thread in the newer style valve, the round nut that holds the spring in place will prevent you from fully installing valve due to it being a larger diameter than the original style valve. Easy fix is to use a dremel with the sanding drum on it and remove just enough material above the threaded area so that the round nut and spring don't touch the wall of the fuel bowl. Also you will need to find a smaller diameter gasket to match the carbs original power valve setting area. Takes about 2 minutes to do and now you can use the newer valves with which ever vacuum setting you need. I opted for the 4.5 valve as I believe that will help me with my off idle tuning, and will be changing jets to a 53 size. This will make for a very close match to the edelbrock model 94 carb they sell.
Got the truck back on the road again today to see how well the mod for the new power valve worked. There was a definite improvement as I was able to get down the road at 55ish. But also discovered that the engine sounds and runs better with the choke rod pulled out about a quarter inch which tells me its running on the lean side so will have to order up bigger jets as the original size 50 can't keep up. Also have the doors painted and clear coated and installed. Tried to install the new window glass but discovered I will have to install the metal glass frame work from my original door glass onto the new glass which I didn't think was going to be needed so I didn't have them sanded and painted. And of course have to fix up the glass rail that hooks up to the window regulator mechanism as it is in rough shape. Got most of the new glass channels installed except for the 2 pieces that clip into the area by the built in door grab area. The clips supplied in the kit are complete junk and don't match the original clips at all but do fit in the small holes the the old clips came out of. Have to see if napa has them clips I need.
small update today. Got the glass frames painted and installed on the new glass. had to use the glass rails that attach to the window regulator from my original doors as the junkyard doors used a different design rail and no glass frame. everything installed into the door and working as it should. had the truck out a week ago for a quick spin around the block, those 17" traction tires light up nicely in second gear. have a pinion seal leak on the rear end but that will take some work to fix as someone years ago spot welded the castle nut that holds the yoke to the pinion shaft. looks like i'll have to cut the nut into 2 pieces carefully so as to not damage the threads under it then grind down the spot weld that remains or cut off that section of threads. that will shorten the pinion shaft sticking out a bit but should still have plenty of thread surface for the new nut. next thing to work on is the running boards and fabricating mounts for the rear lights.
Long overdue update here. can't believe its been 6 months. got a little busy with a new job. anyways here is how it looks so far. need to get the new grill bars ordered, but forget to get them when i ordered up the intake and carbs.
Also going to change out the original intake and single carb for an offenhauser dual carb intake and 2 brand new carbs. seems kind of a waste to run an old junk carb and intake with all the good mods done to the engine.
Looking so good! I know all about other projects; that's the story of my life. I seem to get so involved with other projects and when I finally get back to my own, a friend shows up with a water pump that needs a bearing, or he got a new fuel pump for his IH truck and the lever is too short (so we switch levers) and on and on. Looking forward to more posts from you. Thanks. G.
Your truck is looking good! Especially like the motor and the new intake and carbs. Where did you get the new headliner for the cab? I need to order one also.
Thanks,
Joe
headliner kit and seat upholstery was bought at macs. pretty descent for the price when i got it. No box for this one, came with a dekalb stake bed which i'll redo come spring.
