Smile Need Opinion on Aftermarket Oil Cooler

Hey Guys & Gals, My buddy wrecked his truck! What a bummer, but I get some of the leftovers...Helluvaway to get parts huh? Anyway his truck had a 6.9 n/a. He bought an oil cooler kit for it, the kind that has a radiator and a thermostat. Supposedly it has an adapter that screws on where the filter goes and fits fl-1a filters. He didn't get a chance to install it so it is still in the box. I can get it for $40.00 bucks.

I have always thought our stock oil coolers did a good job, however I do tow a 5th wheel a lot as well as some gooseneck trailers hauling cows around here in Texas. My question is...is it worth installing? Will my old truck get any benefits? The thermostat will block oil flow to the radiator at 170 degrees and allow flow at 180 degrees. That sounds like it would keep the oil to cool, that's why I am asking these questions.

Thanks for all opinions and suggestions,

BeerCan500

I think this is a good idea, remember these engine's have coolin jet's that squirt oil up into the bottom of the piston skirt. plus I think it would be less wear on bearing's. that said what brand is it and where do I get one? Thank's

Hello Mudguts, I am not sure of the brand cuz it came in a brown box. However, my buddy bought it from National Parts Depot. Part #F6642-2. I think my buddy said he gave about $90.00 bucks for it. It looks like a good one. 6 pass cooler, about 8" tall, 17" wide, & about 3/4 to 1" think. Comes with the oil filter adapter, thermostat, a bunch of fittings, and about 10' of hose. Apparently it is supposed to be able to lower oil temp 30 to 50 degrees depending.

Anyway, if I get to feeling froggy and all wrenched up I might just install it.

Yeah '94IDITurbo7.3...that's what I said in my first post...I always thought our stock coolers did a good job. That's why I said if I felt froggy I might put it on. So far I haven't been able to find any (good) reason to install it. The best I can come up with is to install it to get a little extra oil running around in the system, but even then it would probably be less than a pint so that doesn't seem worth it.

Oh well, I'll just keep waiting to see what the other guys have to say. Maybe it will turn out to be useful for something...maybe cooling the oil right before going into turbo or something...

Nah, I got a zf-5...I think I know where u wuz goin. I do remember some posts about a guy who drilled some holes in the pto plate on his and hooked up a cooler but I never could figure out where he got the pressure to pump the fluid through cuz I thought the zf-5 didn't have an internal pump like a 6 does.

You're right, the ZF-5 does not have an internal pump. You could add an electric one easily enough. I wonder if a fuel pump would have enough flow. Its also possible to use the mechanical lift pump on the engine if you've added an electric pump to the truck. Again, I'm not sure how much that would flow, but even if its a bit slow, the extra cooling would help the ZF last longer.

Yeah an external pump sounds like a good idea. I guess if an external pump was added, then the problem would be where to hook up the exit and entrance of the cooled fluid. It seems to me the exit would need to be near the bottom of the tranny and the entrance near the top. If the exit and entrance were to close to each other it seems like most of the same fluid would get caught up in a loop and not mix well with the whole of the tranny...maybe not tho...just the fact that the tranny is turning gears might be enough to cause good mixing...Who knows?

Might be worth searching for an answer. Heck, you could even hook up a good temp gauge too...What go you think? I think it might be a good idea and not all that difficult to accomplish.
