Oil Filter Cooler

Since we are having so much fun in the oil filter magnet thread, I thought we should also talk about these oil filter coolers:http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...34&prmenbr=361

Anyone tried one? It would be particularly useful to hear from someone who also has an oil temperature gauge to see if it is a significant effect.

TP, I would associate this type of cooler with snake oil. Before trying anything like this it is important to know the operating range of the oil that you have in your engine. Most of the time it will mirror your temp gauge but in pulling a trailer or a long uphill climb, temps can go into the 260-265 range. It is possible, but not likely that it will get any hotter. Does this create problems? If you are using a decent oil-No. HT/HS rating are given on all oils. The tempature at which the test is run is at the engineers agreed upon max temp your engine oil will ever see and that is 302F. This is where they separate the good, bad, and the ugly. Most oils will survive easily at or below the 260-265 range. Should you desire an oil cooler, I would suggest a small radiator style with a thermostat. You can run oil too cool and it will sludge and not be able to "cook" off the contaminants.

Get a good infrared laser thermometer and play around with it . . . I use one to check the thermostat housing to determine the temp that the stat starts opening, brake temps etc. It would probably work on the oil filter case also.

I run those coolers on my oil and transmission filters. I wouldn't expect much effect but what the heck they look cool and they were on sale.

TallPaul: If you want a simple and effective cooler, get the oil cooler used by Ford on their police cars. It goes between the block and filter and uses the coolant for cooling. It connects to the heater hose returning to the engine. I'll post part #'s tomorrow.

I have seen ads for that type cooler. Looks good. Not sure I need one. Last fall I noticed that my oil pressure would drop a few pounds on longer trips of say 20 plus miles and thought maybe it was getting too hot. Tried one of these collars for a couple days and it did not seem to help. That was with a brew of 2 parts 5w30 and 1 part 20w50 (test). Now I am running all 10w40 and so far, it seems to be more stable (and not running the collar, but have the 1.75" longer filter too), though have not had much time to test it in this colder weather. Next summer if I get the same problem I will put the collar back on for a while to see what happens. I just wondered if someone had evidence to verify if the collars actually were significant. But if I do need oil cooling and the collar dosen't work, I likely would do the type you referred to. Thanks.

Hello old farmer...I have this type of oil cooler on my 1996 explorer 5.0 v8 engine block. Am in the process of swapping out the power steering rack and find the filter/cooler is still in the way even after lifting the engine up and inch or so. Figured the only way to get the rack out now was to remove the filter/cooler. Just doing a bit of checking around to see what this setup was about and what replacement gasket I will need. An earlier post by Racerguy outlines the removal and installation in detail. Look forward to your part numbers.

Happy New Year
Casey
