All right, so here's what I've got. I had two wires (going to what? No idea, I haven't traced them yet, I just know for a fact when I pulled the original alternator off it worked) and I thought I had wired them back to the same place. I've looked at wiring diagrams, that's fine and dandy, but what I'm wondering if I can't trace these or the wires are shot to crap, can I bipass the relay all together and run one straight from the battery, and one to the frame for ground? Or would I need the ground? Ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Electrical isn't my cup of tea.
For the wiring for a 72, the follwoing wires go to the Regulator from the alternator, Black/Red, Orange, White/Black. Black goes to the regulator and the starter.
Yeah, I know. I appreciate that. But I'm trying to bipass all the stock crap, so I don't have to figure out where this rats nest of wire goes. I wanna know if I can run it single wire from battery to the alternator.
Not that alternator. But you can get a later 3G which is a great alternator and run it with a single hot wire. You will probably loose the function of the amp meter but they are junk and barely work if at all anyway. Just put a volt meter in.
But the problem you have isn't as huge as you think. Peel the tape off if you want to know where the wires go. The ones on the back of the alternator are marked the same as the ones on the regulator, not hard to figure out
Yeah, it had to wires originally, I think I just miswired something along the way, so I'm gonna take a stab at it after work. If not, I"ll just rewire the whole damn thing.
The old 1G alternators are pretty tough and last forever. But they were only around 60 amps at best and the regulators can be a problem. If you have the electronic or solid state Motorcraft or Autolite regulator your ok but NO aftermarket regulators are worth a crap.
I think the 3G that you can mount is from a Taurus, maybe some Mustangs and Econolines. It would be nice to know for sure.
