I am working on my 72 F100 360 with a C6 transmission. When I bought the truck it was leaking small amounts of transmission fluid fron the bellhousing. I figured it was from the front seal and decided I to pull the transmission. After I pull off the tourque converter I look back at the trans and find a small blue rubber plug. I look closer at the transmission bellhousing and see the hole it came out off. It is on the lower right of the bellhousing. I don't understand why it is there. I have searched all over for an answer and can't find out any thing. I need help. I want to rebuid the trans and would like to no if a rebuil kit would come with a new one. What purpose does this hole serve? I have looked at pictures and seen that the hole is usually pluged. Is this plug replaced from behid the tras pump? I think it does but I am not sure. The plug looks like it is torn up a little bit at one end. Any help would be appreciated.
It looks like this part number is for the torque converter drain plug. I am not looking for that part. I have taken some pictures. I hope it helps. At this point I figure that it a plug that was never to be taken out and whoever worked on this transmission before took it out. Then they could not find a replacement and tried to plug it with the plue rubber plug. If that is the case I guess I will have to find some way to plug it myself. If there is a part number for this plug I would like to go back with the right part. The pictures show the blue rubber that was used as a plug. The hole is located at the bottom left of the housing. I have one picture with the blue plug in place.
That blue plug looks like blue RTV silicone to me, I would have to look tomorrow at a C6 transmission I have out to be sure, but I believe that hole should have a flat steel plug kind of like a freeze plug in an engine block but smaller.
I finally found a plug at NAPA 17/32" is the one I needed. They had to order it for me. I am rebuilding the transmission now. I found out what the hole was for. It is there to hold a pin that is used to make the band operate. This is the hole that is used to install and remove that pin.
I have a new question for any of you that have transmission experiance. I bought a spring compressor toll that came with a video of rebuilding a c6 transmission. In the video the guy says to used dexatron 2 instead of type F if you are replacing all the clutches and steel plates. I am confused with should I just go with the type F like I orginally planned or is there a reason to change?
I have one more question? Is there a torque setting for the band adjustment. The video I have just shows the guy tighten it with a wrench and then back it off 1 1/4 turn. I have watched several other videos of other types of transmissions and they say torque it to so and so inch pounds and then back it off. I would prefer to have a torque limit. I tend to over tighten things. Please help if you can.
