Alternator wiring woes
My wiring is a mess and I've been working on and posting about my headlights, they were dim. I got those to get a LOT brighter and when night falls I hope I'm not dissapointed. But back to the alternator, it's an Autolite 55 amp unit that I took to Checker and had it tested 3 times. Good all 3. My voltage at the battery when truck is off is 12.6. When running with all my accesories on (healdlights, tailights, interior lights) is about 12.4. I've searched on this site in the posts about non charging alternator and tried some of those things.
I have a boot with two wires on it...black and orange. I looked at the wiring diagram and connected black to the starter relay and orange to the far right or black wire on my voltage regulator. The others I hooked up color coded. Yellow to yellow and green to green. The two white wires I have on the regulator are not hooked to anything at the moment. Also my horn is not on the truck.
Also the alternator has 3 other screws sticking out of the back. One had a black rubber circle type boot on it. I grounded this to the frame crossmember as I just did my headlights. Still not charging. This left two open position on the alternator, not sure if one of them is the correct ground or not. Any help would be much appreciated!
P.S. The wiring in this truck is terrible. Nothing seems to be stock at all including wiring colors. I've found wires that are just cut at both ends and hanging around for fun I suppose. Some wires were folded over themselves and were about 10 feet long for a 1 foot connection.
Pulling my hair out!
