I am wondering if I would be able to drop my tranny and get it out from under the truck using a jack with a transmission adapter on it. Has anyone done this in a similar situation?
This would be for the truck I have listed in my signature below which has an E4OD and a 4" front, 3" rear Rancho lift.

My transmission jack has a vee-shaped shallow trough on which the bottom of the trans rests. This is good with manuals, as their belly usually is rounded. Autos have a flat pan. Either one, if you cvan strap it down tightly someway, to a typical "curb" jack, it can be done, carefully. Best if 2 guys do it. Get a sense for how it's balancing just as you break it away from the engine- support the engine soundly first! If balance is off, forward or backward, move it appropriately on the jack, so it won't suddenly slide or tip, forwards or backwards. impish
The E4OD is the heaviest trans that was fitted to these trucks, you better plan very well what you will be doing. I would try what you want to do only if the jack you have is extremelly strong and reliable, and even then I would take special care.
I did it with a c6.Removed the transfercase first.Used the trans adapter on a 2 1/2 ton trolley jack to pull it back/lower the trans and had to slide the trans off the jack to get it from under the truck(88 F250 4x4 stock height "32 in tires.)Very heavy trans when you're on the ground at the same level as the trans.A helper is a plus.Make sure you support the engine before you pull the trans off it.
OK, I looked it over and it looks like I need to remove the 4X4 shifter linkage. It's not clear to me how to do that, I see one bolt but it has a bead weld next to it so it won't move, can't really see any other places to remove it. Anyone remember how they did it?
I got the tranny back from the shop today and I have it up on the jack, ready to go in but before I put the torque converter on I thought it might slip off it's alignment as I am moving the tranny around. Is there a reliable way to secure the torque converter while I install the tranny?
