Question Transmission Jack Question

Hi guys,
I own a 1990 FORD F-150 XLT 4X4 5.0L shortbed w/ 72K miles I've had since day one. I was considering selling it but have decided to keep my baby. I need to drop the tranny (M5OD) because of some shifting problems. I'm going to replace the Clutch slave cylinder and other clutch components while I'm in there.
I own a hydraulic floor jack but not a transmission jack. What do you think about using a motorcylce jack to drop the tranny down? It seems to me it might work ok. Thanks for any input!

I got a trans jack attachment at harbor fright it was only like 50 bucks and it go's right in floor jack when you pull pad off so you can have best of both worlds I used it a few times seeing I have a E40D and once with out and it made my life so much better getting every thing to line up and held in place I had a hell of a time I used a floor jack and no trans adaptor

If you can afford it, get the Harbor Freight 450lb transmission jack.
They have a 20 percent off coupon for any one item so the price would
be around $64.00 plus any tax.

It has excellent casters so positioning the trans is very easy. You can
use a 1/2 ratchet or impact wrench to raise or lower it. The support
tray does tilt front to back but is held in position by wing nuts so
it isn't very precise.

Tranny jacks are nice but YOU DON"T NEED ONE!

I barrowed my neighbors motorcycle jack and it works great! Here's what I did...

Make a wooden cradel out of 4x4's and 3/4in plywood that cups the bottom of the tranny. You just have to angle a table saw and cut the 4x4 into 2 triangular pieces. Screw the two triangular pieces to the plywood and add 4 big eyelet bolts to the sides of the plywood. The idea is to make a sturdy platform that will cup the tranny and keep it from rolling and adding the eyelets so you can use a couple ratchet straps to hold the plywood to the tranny. then you just bolt it to the motorcycle jack. My neighbors jack had removable plastic pads on either side and holes under them so I could bolt the plywood straigt to the jack.

The only thing you are really missing is the ability to tilt the tranny when putting it back in (i'm not sure the $80 HF jack has a tilt ability for install...???). Not having tilt isn't anything that a little raw arm strength can't fix. Tranny jacks are really nice, but if you are on a limited budget and limited garage space (for 2-3 jacks) then the motorcycle jack with a few modifications. I do wood working so making that attachement only took me 20 mins to rough it in, and find hardware....
