Don't let that 65watt number mislead you. Its not like a 65w light bulb. A 35watt kit is a better choice if you are going to use stock headlights because they run cooler and draw less on the wiring and electrical system. The bulbs are the same regardless of the kit, its the ballasts and draw that are different.

HID's put out 71 lumens per watt compared to 18 lumens per watt with halogens, so even the 35watt kit is 4x brighter than halogens. Also, it takes 25,000 watts to fire HID bulbs then 80 or so watts to sustain them once they are ignited.

Well I stopped by Advanced Auto Parts to grab some stuff and I thought - let me go over to the headlights and take a look at these bulbs again.
Well, you are correct and I was wrong. Yes, the Sylvania Silver stars have a very obvious blue tint.Iit took a little bit of a stare but like you said the Sylvania Silverstar Ultras do have a slight blue tint to them. I can't see it when the lights are installed but in the package there is definitely a slight blue tint. I still like them (probably would like HID's after this thread) and really like the additional side lighting to help spot the deer on the side of the road - but now I want to learn some more info on these HID's.

I haven't done much research regarding wattage...what is the highest we can run in our trucks?

Buffalo, today we got some rain and these Ultras perform really bad with wet ground...have you noticed the same thing? I looked it up briefly and some guys on a crown vic forum were reporting the same thing.

Our trucks can run anything we want with the alternators we run. The limit will be the stock headlights because of heat and of course the wiring but you have already posted the upgrade links.

I wouldn't push more than a 55 kit on stock housing personally.

Yes, but the halogens don't put anywhere need the heat the HID's do so it's not really an apples to apples comparison.

I'm comparing it against bulbs such as the Philips halogens not the HIDs.

From what I have read, headlights on a 35w kits can get to around 180*. 35w fog lights get up to 220* because the housing is so much smaller. 55w kits get even hotter.

I think I will take a ir heat gun and take some temps although I am not worried about fire. The only reports I have seen on fires is because the person did not install the bulbs correctly and they contacted the lens or fell out.

Stock halogens run around 80* from what I have read. I haven't verified any of these figures.

Stock halogens are way hotter than 80f, turn one on for awhile and grab it with your hand and then tell me they burn at 80f.
