there's no better auto trans.however there are many builders who specialize in E40D's.
such as racerx, ats, bts.due to the power output, these trans are likely overkill for our applications.so should you ever need,it'll likely outlast the truck.not cheap though.i think bts (brains truck shop) is the only one who offers a lifetime warranty.likely the most expensive option though of course.
while installing gauges, put a trans temp on your list, and install an external aux cooler should you need it to aim for temps around 175 @ the test port or pan.
flush every 30k miles.though perhaps a bit over kill if you can maintain such temps, but fluid is cheap compared to transmissions.

here's what happens with a complete converter failure, and some tips posted in the thread for signs to watch out for,to help you catch it before it happens:

when ever you change the idle speed you will need to adjust your TPS setting.

if you have to have foot to the floor to obtain 65mph something is rally wrong with your fuel system, most likely the IP.

I think you were doing pretty good to get 65 with that load...

I think your problem is the tach or sensor, and not that you're really idling at 300 rpm. You could tell for sure if it was turning that slow. It would be shaking the truck apart.
