I have a fe motor i need help figuring out what it is. Where the 352 is supposed to be cast on front right of timing chain cover is an upside down T. Underneath the exhaust manifold is the letter X on drivers side. I know this is an fe block, but why the strange castings? Any help is appreciated, thanks
The ford employees were drinking heavily that day.
Measure the bore and stroke to find out what engine it is.
if the engine is apart, check to see if the bottom end has reinforced webbing. Check for anything else that looks special. Ignore numbers unless you are interested in years... ie a C4AE block could be from a 65 car, but not from a 63.
i have the topend off, only thing different i have found so far are steel head gaskets. i wasnt planning on opening up the bottom end, but i may out of curiosity

You need to anyway, if only to change the oilpan gasket. Old gaskets have a way of not sealing. Measure the bore and stroke. If the block has screw in core plugs(instead of pressed in freeze plugs) then you've got a 427.
i will open up the bottom end on my next day off, I dont have a bore mic, so using my calipers, i got 4.03 for a bore measurment(this is a close measurment). It does not have screw in frost plugs. Is there anything else i should look for
Check the crank numbers. 1U is a 410/428, C4AE, 3U & (I think) 2U will be a 390 stroke crank. Don't recall what the 352/360 crank is. And there are more numbers out there, but these are the most common. But with a 4.03 bore, you've most likely got a 352
As long as you have the heads off, check the stroke by comparing piston hieght at the top and bottom of travel. Most likely will come out 3.50", given the 4.030" bore measurement. Sounds like a .030 over 352 to me, though.
