block I.D.

hi all ,this is my first post in the FE forum so here goes.i have a what i believe to be a 390,my neighbor, who's back 40 i drug it out of said it is a 360,the engine was in a 72 3/4 ton 2wd pickup.i pulled the engine apart and my suspicions were correct, the cranks casting #'s are 3U and my book tells me it's a 1973-1976 pickup truck 390 crank,i cannot find any casting #'s on the block except 48 DIF which i already know what those #'s mean.my real question is the block has ribs on it,like later 427 sideoiler blocks, but it is not a 427,i was just curious if this is a FT truck block or did ford just add ribbing to increase strength in some 390 blocks?thank ya all in advance.

I believe what you have is a 390 truck engine, likely with a reverse image 105 block.

Should be an excellent engine. IMHO

Well with the 48 DIF on it, it's a Dearborn iron foundry cast block not the "105" MCC Michigan casting center block. The ribs are common to find on 69 and later blocks. The ribs seemed to disappear towards the end of production. I've seen some later blocks without them. The Dearborn foundry cast blocks till early 74. The 427 and 428 only remained cast there as the 360-390's went to the new Michigan casting facility. So you might want to drill bit test the block. Lots of 428 industrial blocks were cast during that time. Might be lucky. You can check the date code on the block to timeframe when it was cast.

Man, How the heck would we know what you are looking for?

As for nickel content, that is plain bunk. some may argue the issue, but it has not been proven to be something that you can count on, or find. IMHO
