I found a block that a guyy has forsale. I haven't seen it yet, but he says there aren't any casting #'s on the left side. He found a 65cw2 under the timing cover and on the back of the block a 352 and an "A".
You need to look for numbers like C5AE-C, DT3E, C5AE-B etc. The number that he gave isn't for the block ID. Most all have a 352 cast on the left front too. That or a reverse image 105, the 5 will be backwards for the 501. It is a little better block that just the 352 in most cases because of some extra webbing in the crank area. IMHO
Measure the cyl bore. If the A on the back is a crude sandscratch it could be a 428 block. No casting numbers was common to find from 68 on with some blocks. 428 block stock came with a 4.13 bore and the 390 4.05. Measure carefully as a .060 390 is 4.11 and close to 4.13 and can be confused as a std bore 428.
Ok I spoke with the guy again and he said the "A" on the back of the block looked like it was cast into it. Was there ever an "A" cast on the blocks like this.
I guess I am going to have to find some time and take a drive to look at it. Its only a $100, but I really don't need an extra block, I was hoping for a lucky find. He did say that it does not seem to ever have been bored.
There can be various numbers and letters on the block. All part of the mold number system used by the foundry. The sandscratch is cast in as well. So to me it's sounds like it could be either unless he stated it's not a hand drawn letter.
Here's a pic of the A and C sand scratches so you have an idea what they look like. Maybe he can send you a pic. Did he say what the cyl bores measured?
