I was at the j/y today, and came across a 77 Ford van with a 300 and four on the floor! I've never seen that before. I thought it might have been added, but the column was oem w/o the shifter slot for an auto.
They're around, but RARE! If I were you I'd pull the column, petals and all the van specific stuff for the transmission. Somebody has got to want that stuff. I only know of one member here that has one (or parts from one), his name slips my memory at the moment.
The trans in question is the 4 speed OD, most likely the side-shifted iron-cased unit like I had in mine. 2nd to 3rd is a big gap. Variants include the SROD and a top shifted unit, both aluminum cased. First up here:
That was a factory option for the Ford vans. I had a 78 E100 shorty van with a 351W/4spd. That thing was wicked.
There were also a very few that came with the NP435. I want to build a 86 or older E350 cargo van with the NP435 4 spd. The hardest parts to find are the steering column and the clutch and brake pedal assembly.
It was really weird to see one. I didn't even know they existed. When I saw the floor shifter I thought it was a hack job, but then noticed the column.
other than the column, I think my dad still has all the stuff for a swap. he used to have two of them with 4 speeds. one of them donated its engine to be the first in my bronco. I remember driving that van when I was 15 while my dad slept.
