Decoding a 1980 E150 Cargo Van

The van is a factory 300 Six cylinder 3 speed on the column vehicle. It now has a transplanted Transmission which I believe is the 3 speed/overdrive on the floor.

What is the correct model name for that transmission? Ive been told this transmission is known as a "Toploader imposter" Tag on the side starts with:

RUG CD

Next question I have is concerning the rearend. It is my belief that it has a 9 inch. Im not a Ford guy so Im guessing. Heres the info I got from the tag still affixed to the rearend:

WEV AT OF13

2 75 9 S723A

Tag inside the vehicle on the door jam has an axle code of 13

What do all these numbers and letters decode as?

Your trans is a 4 speed OD. Probably the iron-cased, side-shifted unit. (as in my '85) These are the first up here:

Domestic Truck Tranny Guide

You should be able to see the trans and see if it's iron and has external linkage on the driver side.

If it looks like the picture in the above, and is aluminum, it's the SROD. I doubt it's the top shift model as the shifter would be coming out of the dog house.

I prefer "top-loading 4 speed OD, iron case, side-mount external shifter". They are cast with the RUG code, which follows the ealier performance toploader series of codes. I have also heard they were made for Ford by Tremec and were deemed the "T 170". One guy here claims they are Clark transmissions, but I have never seen them referenced as that anywhere other than his post. For the aluminum boxes, "POS" was used by one in-the-know fellow, but I don't think that's a Factory term....

"toploader imposters" is a term used here:

http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/imposters.htm

He shows the iron-cased, side shifted one, the only one that looks ALMOST like an original toploader.

Your rear axle should be a 9 inch. If the carrier comes out the front, that's the one.

I'm not one to decode the tag, but the second line that starts with 275 tells me the tag came off a 2.75 : 1, open diff.

Pretty pics of 9" diff:

Currie Enterprises 9 Inch Ford

I have 3.50s with that trans and it's geared pretty tall with even 31s on it.

WEV-AT & 13 & S723A = Ford 9" / 2.75-1 / non Limited Slip

RUG-CD = 1978/79 Ford Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive Transmission, side shifter.

Sounds as though we have pritnear the same rig, mines' an '81 E-150 4.9l with the RUG/RAB 3+1 Overdrive. Hopefully the shifter/linkage is okay. Ford in their wisdom after discontinuing use of this setup destroyed all of their dies. I'n my case I had to graft a Hurst unit on with a fabricated mount.
