Basic 6.0 Question/Problem

Hey guys, my dads 03 6.0 w/160k miles is starting to have some issues. There is 0 power when motor is cold, you can put the pedal to the floor and it BARELY moves. But once its warm that issue goes away. My dad drives like hes 85 anyways so he never accelerates fast. But whenever I drive it Ill stomp on it and itll throw out a nice cloud of black smoke, but just once, like its clearing something out. Starts kind of rough, but idles fine. Mainly just worried about the motor having no power when cold, and it occasionally just doesn't have much "get up and go". Wasnt sure if this was the "stiction" Ive heard about or not, and whether or not to try an additive like hot shot secret.

I dont know about the Snake Oils
If you go WOT when its cold you Will stretch the Head Bolts

But Id start out by checking the FICM VOLts
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...procedure.html

And its a GOOD Idea to give it a few WOT runs every week or so to make the turbo veins go thru a Full Range of motion what happens is they will stick after awhile because of the soot but let it warm up to operating temp first

The best thing Your Dad could do is get some gauges like a Scan Gauge its cheap like 160.00 and keep an eye on things it just plugs into the OBDII port and is really easy to use just have to program what gauges he wants and irts pretty much Plug&play

There is a "low power" troubleshooting thread in the Tech Folder.

By no power I meant no response from the engine. I know WOT on a cold motor isnt a good thing to do, but WOT when its just started does the exact same as 1/4 throttle. I've heard thats the start of an injector issue, but to me it just seems like something electrical isnt allowing the motor to reach anything above 1/4 throttle, almost like a safety to prevent WOT throttle on a cold engine.

I don't push mine when cold, so I couldn't give you a EGT or boost reading. I just picked it up in a thread (trying to find the link) that these trucks are defueled by PCM strategy until warm. It makes since, until the block is warm...your not going to get a complete fuel burn anyway since these motors function on compression & heat. I know Cat motors do that (the HUEI on the 7.3L & 6.0L is very similar to Cat's HUEI system)...they would defuel themselves until the coolant reached 150F. Maybe the Great Cheezit will chime in with his endless 6.0L knowledge.

I don't believe there is such a "safety" for cold engines. The programming will certainly affect the power when it is cold, but my truck certainly doesn't behave like your description.

As I said, you might want to go through this thread:
