Should tow 8-9k like it isn't even there.

I don't have a 5th wheel or anything, but move a number of boats in and out seasonally.
They can be heavy for SRW and a receiver hitch.

Well I'm hoping the cam, timing chain, carb and intake wake this motor up.

So I'm leaning to the 3.73's. I want to order them this week. I don't want to big of gaps between gears.

Like I pointed out earlier, mine as a stock other than a straight up timing set from a pre-72 engine and knocking the flame arrester out of the tail pipe, pulled a total load of 16,120 lbs with just me in it and full tanks, add wife, two ChowChows and two small grandkids, probably another 450lbs or 16,570 all together just fine. I had a 3.55 gear and C6 at the time. Still running the 4180 and all emission stuff except blocked off EGR valve vacuum.

I guess my question is if I drop to 50-55 on a hill with that load will it be able to pull and increase speed back to 70?

That actually leads me to the 3.73's as a C6 will have a non lock up torque converter so your motor will actually turn a 150 - 200 more rpms at the same speed.

Sorry for being so needy.

Well, what I have done with mine is in this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...n-86-f350.html
I went to EFI so I could run an E4OD and still keep my 3.55 gear. In third lockup I will have no slip and in 4th lockup I will be a 0.71 X 3.55 or 2.52. The engine I am building will be .040 over with an Edelbrock Performer cam, block decked to get me up around 9.2-9.5:1CR and converted to MAF sequential EFI. My goal is to see if I can get a bit better than 10mpg empty and the 8.5mpg towing the 5th wheel. I also do have a bit more air drag with the 5th wheel.

Nice build there labaron.

I ordered the 3.73's. We'll see how it performs.

Wouldn't you be better with the rpm's @ 70mph that 3.54's would give you, for cruising? Then downshift (close ratio T19 - right?) into 3rd on hills?
I guess it depends how steep your hills are, & how often you're below 70mph.

Well 70 is highway. Rural KY are the hills. I went with the 3.73's.

I also got a box with this stuff in it.

I like shiny things.

Did you get the timing chain with 4* retard built in???
I can only see one keyway in that crank sprocket.

Very likely he did, most suppliers list "one size fits all" timing sets for the pre 88 460s. If you ask about the 68-71 set, they tell you it's the same. I would just get a late roller chain set rather than even mess with a Morse set ever again. BTW, they are straight up.

Summit Racing SUM-G6537 - Summit Racing® Standard Timing Sets - Overview - SummitRacing.com

It's the same one I posted. One key way. No advance or retard. I called tech support at summit when I ordered to verify.

I asked about the cloyes one and the roller will get me 2hp. So the dude said just get the regular one.

BS!

They have no idea.

Either get a pre '70, or as Bill said, the single roller for the EFI trucks if you're not willing to spend the extra $5 to get rid of the emissions crap timing.

That's one way to go. and an economical one too.

I'm not looking at gaining 2hp in frictional loss from a roller, I'm looking at not having to replace the crap hivo in 60k.

4* of cam retard is probably worth 50 foot pounds and a whole hell of a lot of throttle response.

I'm willing to spend the $5. That's not the issue.

If you check the application on this one I posted it is 68-71.

With no advance or retard at the cam or crank.
