Question 2000 trans shift problem...no second gear

Ive been without second gear for some time now. Shift 1-2 shows up on my code reader. I can goose it up to about 2500rpm and let off to get to the remaining gears. Does this sound like a shift solenoid problem? Has anyone changed them out? Are they hard to do?do they come in an assemby or individualy? Are they cheap???trying tosave a buck. I appreciate your time and input.

Hmmm, almost exact same symptoms as when the mechanical diode went out in the '01. Calls for a rebuild. The mechanical diode had a short run in some '01 trucks and yours shows to be a 2000. There's some good trans guys here, I don't have a good answer. Bump you to the top.

"Trying to save a buck".

You need a transmission rebuild as your intermediate sprag is toast.

Sorry.

By randomly replacing parts? This is usually the most expensive way to fix any problem.

That is most likely the problem.

I'm having the same EXACT problem that popped up 2 weeks ago. Will it get worse? If I keep driving it, will I make it even worse? I too, just don't have the bucks right now to spend thousands on a repair. Even if I took it to AAMCO, what is this going to cost me? Suggestions would be appreciated. Mine is a 2001 with 110,000 on it and was used pretty lightly over the past 10 years.

I would suspect a low side would be about $2500, and high side could go over $4000. It is going to get worse until it won't go anymore. How long that will take is impossible to predict.

It may last another 10K miles, or it may go 10 miles.

It depends on how much shrapnel you have floating around and what's being torn up by those metal pieces every mile you drive.

Thanks for all of your help, guys. I appreciate all the input. I'm waiting for some clarification from Mark on another thread, about the possibility of NOT having mechanical diodes in my SD.

It doesn't matter. The intermediate sprag can fail in ANY of the E4OD or 4R100 transmissions. It's just that the design of the "mechanical diode" lends itself to breaking easier. It's still a one way clutch.

Do yourself a favor and beg/borrow money to get a reputable trans rebuild, (BTS/JOHNWOOD)
I don't want to read another story like what happened to me.
I had three rebulit transmissions in my truck last year....because I "wanted to save money"
I finally wised up after waisting alot more money than If I would have had it done right the first time.

Read my sig...

Understood, Cody. Thanks. I do realize that anything can fail and will in time. And Frank, thank you, too. I'm not cheap, just broke. I may not even keep the truck, so I need to make some decisions on my next move.
