It should be on the vacuum/calibration sticker, but all my books say 10BTDC.

Thanks, I went back out and took a really good look and found it. It was cleverly hidden in the ignition portion of the sticker (10 BTDC) Who would have thought they would put timing under ignition! I was positive I looked that sticker over well the first time. One of the many reasons I don't make my living as a mechanic! Thanks for the help!!

Need just a little more help!

OK, got the new distributor in and the truck starts. Ran a little rough at the old marks, so I moved it to get it to run smooth to warm up. I've got my timing light hooked to #1 and now I can't seem to get the light to register correctly. My truck has markings on both sides of the engine. the are markings on the timing cover it's self and a set of hard to read markings on a sawtoothed deal that has a round hole in the top down below the smog pump on the main pulley. Problem is I can't get the mark close to either side. I can't even find the mark actually

I've disconnected the spout connector (tried it with it connected when warming up and no difference) I'm using a square slot in the main pulley because I don't see any other marks. What am I missing here? (that's probably obvious to someone who really knows what they are doing).

This site is awesome for help on stuff like this!!

uhh... I'm still searching for the timing mark on the pulley, it appears mine must be different than what was posted above. I've been all over the crank pulley and can not find a mark anywhere except the square hole which doesn't seem to relate to anything. Any one have experience finding the mark on the 4.9L in an 86?

I have an 86 4.9L and once casually looked for the timing mark. I couldn't find it either.

You might need to take some sandpaper to it to clean the rust off.

The 4.9L's have a notch in the dampener, you should find a tab mounted to the block right around the dampener, your degree markers will be on that tab (tab cleaning may be needed) yes on the saw toothed, the wider notch is usually the notch that marks 0 degrees. hope this helps
