It is completely flat black and I think I am going to name it Darth Vader. Anyhow this van is older than I am, and admittedly I do not know much about fords so I thought I would ask for help identifying this van’s parts and it’s 4x4 conversion.
The guy I bought it from told me it is a 1972 econoline 150 that his buddy did the 4x4 conversion on himself using the frame off a 77 bronco and the axels out of a 73 ford f-250. The van has a drum brake dana 44 eight lug up front with spicer locking hubs, that is suspended using coil springs and rods& bushings. The van has a leaf sprung dana 60 out back.
From what I can gather the current engine is not the original engine, and the van originally had a manual transmission because it has all sorts of clutch linkage bosses, no neutral/park safety switch and no prnd21 indicator on the steering column or dash, it also has the clutch pedal hangar underneath the dash. The sticker on the engines valve cover says it is a 1973 ford 302, it has what appears to be a motorcraft 2100 carburetor on it. I am told the tranny is a c-6, but I don’t know how to tell the difference between a c-6 and a c-4 so any help there is appreciated. The tranny does have the ford solid rod kickdown linkage. All this dumps into a dana 20 transfer case that has been twin sticked.
The vin number of the van is E14AHP09285 and I would appreciate any help decoding it. Further information on the door mounted vin tag is as follows Wb 123, color m, model e140, body 22, Trans C, h.p. 109 at 3800 rpm., axel 12, d.s.o. 22
I need to know what kind of tie rod end I need to put it all together, also if anyone can point me towards a good source of spare parts, good mechanics manuals, and if anyone can send me pics of their old ford van so I know what parts I am missing would be helpful. The van does have a quadravan sticker on it, so if this conversion screams quadravan or backyard mechanic let me know, any help/advice/comments is greatly appreciated answer replies here or email me at Preacher_scott@hotmail.com

Well, big block Ford engines mate to the C-6. Three speed automatics. I dont really know anything about a C-4..

From what I can tell based on a quick google search, the easiest way to tell is the C6 has an integral bellhousing and the the C4 has a bolt-on bellhousing. Also the pan on the C4 is square vs. the C6 bellhousing which has a corner notched out to make it look like Utah.

Van sounds like a real nice find. The front axle is coil sprung? Sounds like someone did a lot of work on that conversion.

GVW 4300: 4,300 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

109 HP @ 4,000 RPM

22 = Charlotte NC Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the vehicle from.

1969/74 E100/300: Econoline (there is no such thing as a 1968), are basically identical and offered three different engines: 240 & 300 I-6's / 302 2V. The only A/T available was the C4.

First year Ford offered a C6/302 combination (as an option) in F100/150's & E100/150's: 1978.

No 302's in Bronco's in 1978/79. Previous year Bronco's with 302's used the C4.

The C4 has 11 transmission pan bolt holes / The C6 has 17 transmission pan bolt holes.

Other way to tell a C-6 is it will be embossed in big letters "C-6" on the side of the transmission near the top.

I imagine the front end is a F-250 front end. Your best bet is to post the pictures in the 4x4 OffRoad forum of the front end. The parts might be custom made to fit a 1973 Bronco frame. If you post pictures of the frame, the guys there will be able to ID it.

Not all of them do. For example, mine does not have that.

As NumberDummy stated, the C4 has 11 transmission pan bolt holes / The C6 has 17 transmission pan bolt holes.
