The distributor is loose and spins, I can get it to come out about 1/8" or so, but it seems like something is holding it in still. I have the hold down completely removed. There is what looks like a set screw just below where it meets the block. It turns freely, but won't back out. Am I missing something obvious here?

You're not missing anything, the distributor's just in there real good. There's no screw or anything like that, you just gotta work it out a little bit at a time. Just keep pulling, and turn it every so often in between pulls and see if it comes out.

I would suggest not prying under it with anything as the housing isn't very sturdy. You could try squirting some motor oil around the base and continue to twist and tug to work it out!

The difficulty is caused by the carbon build-up. Just turn back and forth as you pull up, clean the components good before reassembly.

Carbon? In a distributor shaft housing?

I had a problem getting mine out, too, but I blamed it on the rubber O ring as it made a kind
of "pop" noise when it finally came out.

Had a lot with carbon build up, more common with GM, another sticky component is the oil pump drive shaft.

I don't know what it is, but it looks like a darkbrown goo that gets on everything inside the engine. I would lift it as high as it would go and spray some sort of solvent or wd40 around it to try and dissolve the goo.

Yeah, it wasn't until the Flux Capacitor was made available when those diesel distributors
finally went away.

What really pisses me off about the flux capacitor is that the thing is pretty much useless without the muffler bearings, but for that price you'd think they'd inlcude the bearing as a kit...

I think this thread has gone *slightly* off topic....

However, if using the adjustable power band, better add the cross drilled brake lines so you can stop the vehicle better.......
And the piston return springs.....
