Our state law says the license plate bulb must light the license plate in such a manner that it can be read from a distance of 50 feet. Most other states have similars laws. But I can't recall ever seeing the law enforced to the letter unless the bulb was totally burned out. I doubt seriously that many cops even know the actual law unless the bulb is totally burned out.
The problem with the wording in our state law is the fact that a 25 year old cop has much better eyesight than a 50 year old cop. The lawmakers never take this sort of thing into consideration when drafting and passing laws.

During most of my career I didn't have to fool with DUI, traffic and catching real criminals. During the end when I did, the only thing I enforced on license plates was the people who put the dark shaded covers on their license plates making it impossible to read them. I handed them a screwdriver and made them remove the covers on the spot.... or have the car towed for NO license plates. Their choice.
Even though it's the law, a summons for poorly illuminated license plates didn't stand a chance in court.

Have a buddy we visit once in a while in Culpeper.....it is 29 North out of Charlottesville we go I think ? I'll be more careful through there now !...........dammit !

I always wondered why they sold those tinted license plate covers and why anyone ever ought them, it's like not having a license plate. Not good for robbing a bank either because they would probably pull you over for the plastic cover.

i have had a very rough few days. i lost my best friend the other night to a car crash. she was only 23 and meant the world to me and alot of people. i spent half the day at her family's home trying to help in anyway i can. this is my first loss so close so its all new and hurts so bad.
that being said the only thing that has happened with the excursion is driving. had to fill up tonight. i now know for 100% that when i'm on flat E and the gas light is on and it says 0 miles to empty i have exactly 8 gallons left.
mile check. over 10k since buying last year.
