well guys! i'm planning my big road trip of the summer, hoping to go next week if all goes as planned.
i leave on Aug 2nd for North Dakota and Seattle for 3 weeks, i hate to leave alaska when the summer has been soooooo amazing here! 75+ temps tomorrow they are calling for!!
so before i leave, i want to try and get this trip done...its one i've wanted to make ever since i was a small child and learned of this place in school.
my plan is to drive to McCarthy, AK then either hike or take the shuttle into Kennecott Mine which is about 4.5 miles or so after the road ends.
here is alittle info and pics of the place...i think it will be a awesome trip!!! going to take a few extra spares because they say the gravel road getting in there all 61 miles of it can be harsh.
Getting to Kennecott, Alaska is no Day Trip. First, the drive to Chitina, 250 miles from Anchorage, is on paved roads. Then, take the McCarthy road 61 miles further into the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, on rugged dirt roads (trust me, it takes 2-hours, plus). Finally, you cross a footbridge, where you can go into McCarthy, or take a shuttle-bus the five more miles to McCarthy. The mine and mill town were operational from 1911 to 1938, when the mine closed down, leaving its buildings as its legacy as one of the largest mineral companies in the world at the time.
if some of you remember, last year i took my '00 excursion to Fairbanks, Alaska it was an amazing trip and i just want to get out on the open road again!
lol dont have any cheap explorers...just my baby! which would not work. i need the room to sleep in w/the excursion plus i want/need the extra cruising range with the 44gal tank. when i go camping i pack everything and the kitchen sink.
i think i paid like $150 shipped? dont quote me on that.
i'm really wondering with all the crap i have to get done before leaving if i'll be able to get this trip done. it may have to wait untill i'm back. we shall see how this weekend goes.
i was soooo close to running over a bull moose on the dannng glenn comming in to anchorage tonight!! i mashed the breaks and swerved around it almost into the ditch! at 60mph! almost one less ex around.
