There's a nice 1986 F-150 here in town. I've spoken with the owner (real nice fellow, an over-the-road truck driver) and it's actually a pretty decent truck. He let me nose around under the hood, and he even cranked it up so I could hear how the factory exhaust sounded. (I've been curious about how these trucks sounded when new)
Next time I see him, I'll ask if I can snap a picture of his truck to post on here.
By 1986 The F-series Explorer was at the end of it's life, and they were doing away with it. They were pushing their other limited edition package, The Eddie Bauer, instead.
It's very hard to tell what features are Explorer on your truck, as most of the options were avaliable on all the trimlines, except on the Explorer they were standard equipment.
The XL Trim level, the Dual tanks, the victoria tu-tone paint, etc, could all be included in your Explorer value option, but at a reduced cost. What's the build date of your 1986?
A 1986 Explorer Brochure would be helpfull also, as I don't have that one.
Ok, It's right on your window sticker what's a part of the Explorer option 603.

If your truck didn't have the Explorer option, all those options would have to be ordered seperate at greater cost to you.
I wish I had time to snap pics so easily. Since I bought my f250 theres been so many 80-86s poppin up in town. Am I that much of a trend setter? Or is it just the time of year?
You will always spot more vehicles like yours once you buy one... Just something I have noticed over the years, every time I buy a different rig, the same thing happens.

Reason: Spelling
It ok. It has its fair share of flaws. Couple dents and scratches. It was restored 6 years ago and never driven. The paint work left alot to be desired in my eyes. And when the guy picked it up , to drive it home(100 miles) none of the lights worked. But my buddy got 7500 for it. So i guess he did alright. But he also had about 20k into redoing it
And since this thread doesn't have enough pictures, some of the trucks I've come across in the junkyards.
1985-1986 F250 XLT Lariat, possibly an Explorer.
My dummy AM/FM cassette radio came from this Bronco.
And last but not least, the Ranger Lariat I pulled most of my Ranger Lariats parts from. My seat, vinyl trim panels above the arm rests, woodgrain door panel trim, and chrome/vinyl body side moldings all came from this truck. I wish I had grabbed the grille and the clear park lights from it before it got crushed. This truck was probably a real good looker in it's day..
Nothing in the interior even denotes a Ranger Lariat except for the carpet. Note that the carpet is two separate pieces...
Found this guy up at storage as I am working on getting my chassis out of there. I know it's the owner's, that is about it. Lariat emblem hiding behind the mirror, and swiss cheese frame.
Trailer special - what of this is factory? Overloads and swaybar on the 9''? I doubt those coilovers are, just well aged....
Whenever I see a Ranger I always think of you Shaun hahah.
That poor F150 Ranger Lariat Trailer Special. The overloads and coils are aftermarket, probably to support the apparatus he has on the back. However the sway bar is a factory option front and rear. I could use plenty of parts from that truck, especially those wheels. All the Ranger Lariats seem to be in Canada. I can search the US Ebay all day long and only find one Ranger Lariat. But if I hop on to Kijiji, there's always at least 10.
That truck is a factory ******* child. As ctubutis said, it's an 80-81, with the grille of an 82-86, or at the least a blue oval glued to the original grille. As for the mirrors, they were used in 1982 as well, it was 1983 when they switched to the rounded mirrors. IIRC the Trailer Special package name was dropped after 1981, and all trailer tow options were simply called tow package # with no emblems. That would also mean that this truck is a 1980-1981. However, it is impossible to ID the exact year. As a general rule of thumb, 1980 trucks had clear park lights, while 1981-1986 trucks had amber park lights. Unless my eyes deceive me, I see amber park lights on that truck. That normally would suggest a 1981. However, if you look at the moldings on the side of the truck, you can see that the black vinyl inserts are in the shape of a rhombus, which denotes a 1980. Some early 1981's did feature these rhombus moldings, so I would say that this truck was built somewhere between May of 1980 and September of 1981.
