Possible Ford Focus-Based Pickup Spied Testing

Ford’s compact pickup might be making a comeback after all, if we are to believe these recent spy shots.
Remember the good old days of compact pickups? The days when you could buy a cheap, zero-option Ford Ranger for less than half the cost of what the new base Ranger is going to sell for? We certainly do, and we miss those days when you could actually buy a small but capable pickup. But now, on the heels of a recent rumor that Ford might build a tiny pickup based on Focus underpinnings, Automobile has spotted a mule out in the wild.
The vehicle, which many have rumored to be a Ford Courier reboot of sorts, is one of the more heavily camouflaged mules we’ve ever seen. Thus, it’s hard to really tell what’s going on here. But the photographers who shot this unique Ford insist that it packs Focus underpinnings. Which is consistent with the rumors we’ve heard for weeks now.

Ford did its best to make this mule look like a van. But if you look closely, the top portion in the rear and the rear doors are clearly fake. And you can’t blame the Blue Oval for taking such extreme precautions. If they are in fact looking to get back in the compact pickup market, they’d be way ahead of the competition at this point.

Of course, there are no guarantees here. Even if this is the rebirth of what the Ranger should be (minus the lack of body-on-frame construction), we might not even get it in the U.S. But we can dream, no? And personally, we’d be willing to bet that plenty of consumers would welcome a compact, fuel-efficient, cheap compact pickup here with wide open arms.
