Repairing 1972 Door panels where the clips fit

My door panels have broken areas where the clips fit. They are 1972 Sports Custom panels with a Masonite type of backing. The area that holds the clips in place is broken and missing. How do I repair those?

Post a photo of the damage. Might make it easier to make a useful suggestion.

Added, but it is a common issue with many Ford, Mercury, Lincoln models door panels. I had 1969 mustang door panels restored decades ago and they fixed them, but I don't remember what they did.
