Five Fast Ford F-150s: A History of High Performance Pickups
There’s more to see here than just the Lightning and the Raptor.
Ford trucks aren’t just for hauling loads and blasting through the mud. Ford trucks also have a long history of high performance, with a clear lineage that starts back in the early 1990s and continues through today.
Here are five fast Ford pickups (there’s a tongue-twister for you) that offer impressive performance to go along with their load-carrying capability. On road or off-road, nobody does it quite like Ford.
1. Ford F-150 Nite (1991-1992)
Sport trucks were all the rage back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ford joined the party with the Nite package, a factory-sponsored attempt to replicate some of the custom-built Ford trucks that roamed the streets in those days.
Like the Model T decades before, you could have a Nite in any color, so long as it was black. You did have a choice when it came to the neon-colored side stripes, though – a blue/purple gradient or a pink/purple gradient. There was no chrome on the Nites, either. In 1991, single cabs were your only option, but in 1992, and configuration was offered. It also didn’t matter if it was a 4×2 or a 4×4, or an auto or a stick.
However, the Nite package was only available with the 302 cubic inch V8 or the 351 cubic inch V8. Other Nite features included ten-hole aluminum wheels and a sport-tuned suspension. Its monochromatic style and high performance aspirations offered a good hint as to what would follow.
