Finally took the plunge and ordered one of these units. This thread is dedicated to the install, performance and documentation of my experience with Turbonator VGT housing for a 73mm turbine.
Before ordering I went through all of the performance options available for the 7.3 (besides turbo). I was originally set on Injectors, hpop and fuel system to go with the T4 setup I currently have. The options available are great but I just didn't see the appeal to it all. Didn't want to mess with tuning, core charges, quality control etc. So I decided to leave everything "stock" and just add a Turbonator into the mix. I may change the HPOP in the future but that is more of a wear item.
The truck is relatively stock, it has a custom tune, FFD oil logs, T4 turbo mount, built transmission and 4.30 gears.
First off, the quality of this piece is outstanding! Packaging was superb and it basically comes with a contract that you agree upon when you remove it from the box.
Am I correct in remembering the Turbonator turbine output requires a different down pipe mating surface than the Borg Warner turbine?
Any other modifications to the T4 kit hard parts that you anticipate having to make?
Yes, it requires an HX40 (holset turbo) downpipe flange. I might already have the parts on the shelf needed to fab one up, have to check. Also ordered a rebuild kit for my s363 from KC turbos. Besides that it should be 100% bolt-on.
Anyways, here is a video on how to calibrate the actuator. The vanes are preset to the same location as in the video. I messaged them and asked what boost/ebp ratio I should target while tuning, they said 1:1.
I suggest opening the unison ring cavity and lubricating everything in there with tungsten disulfide dry lubricant while the surfaces are still relatively uncontaminated.
