waterpump

1964 F250 4x4
The water pump has a small hole in the housing under the shaft. What is this hole for? It does not leak, but the one on my '63 Coup DeVille does leak. Is this a bad waterpump or canit be fixed?

The hole is a vent. If coolant comes from it than the waterpump seal is bad and most likely a bearing as well.

To add to Artic's comment; its called a weep hole down our way; as mention if its starting to leak anti-freeze; your pump is going out.

If the one on your 63 leaks then you need to replace it before to much longer!!! Or you will replacing more then a water pump! When I was a tech at a local ford dealer a lady had her 96 F250 with a 460 towed in because someone told her not to worrie about! So it caused her to run out of antifreeze and it cost her a new engine!
