i have a 66 ford 2wd with the 4.9L inline 6 and three on tree transmission
the engine is a brand new jasper with less than 1000k on it and the transmission was rebuilt but im looking to put something a little more practical in it because third gear winds out around 55-65 or higher if i really wanted to push it, which i dont obviously, haha
i was thinking either a 4 or 5 speed but am not really sure which would be easiest to install? any ideas?
I'm in the process of installing an M5R2 manual 5-speed transmission behind a 300 I-6 in my '66 Ford F100. This tranny was used in Ford F150 2WD from 1987 through 1994. There's an article on this swap on line where a guy installed an M5R2 in his '67 Ford F100. Through some web surfing, it sounds like some guys don't like the M5R2 tranny because it doesn't shift like a sports car. If Ford used the M5R2 for 7 years, it can't be that bad (I hope).
I should be able to post some photos in a month or so. I have to take the front clip off my '66 and fix the cab floors and cab supports first.
I just installed 3.50 gears behind my 300 six and I am happy with it, speed limits here are as high as 70mph on the freeway which is where it just starts to climb to 2900 rpm, at 65 mph I am running about 2600 rpm which seems right. When I was researching it some people felt with 3.00 grears it was hard on the clutch to take off on inclines, if I was doing freeway mostly and wasn't going to tow I would have probably put 3.25 gears in but for all around duty 3.50's worked out great for me.
