i've looked at a 85 bronco, good shape & good price. some leaks at trans and transfer case, not to bad though. engine runs smooth and quiet, with good oil pressure. but, while running water temp kept increasing and the top rad hose never heated up. when i cut the engine off, the top hose heated up from engine coolant flowing back to rad. its a efi 5.o, but has old style multi v-belts. now the question. does it have incorrect rotation waterpump?
Could have wrong pump, stuck closed thermostat, hose closing up, plugged radiator....
Remove the cap and start the engine. Watch for water flow into the top of the radiator. Water will/should flow when the thermostat opens. If not, check for stuck thermostat. Then investigate the pump. Not sure if you can remove the lower hose and see the vanes to see the direction.
when i first started the engine, i took rad cap off and coolant come out. the top hose got hot after engine was cut off. it acted like pump was trying to pull through top hose and push up through bottom hose
Well the EFI 5.0 should have a reverse rotation pump while all the old v-belt set up used standard rotation pumps. Shouldn't be an issue assuming they switched the timing cover and and the brackets to the older style.
Easy way to tell old vs new style timing cover is if there is a spot for the mech fuel pump on drivers side.
thanks AzPete and Edgethis. you've giving me something to check on. I looked at the date on the door sticker. It was built in Sept 1985. It's early fuel injection with old style v-belts
