Bad Water Pump?

Ok, I have a 1992 Bronco with a 351W, and when you turn the engine off after it's been running, it leaks what I'm guessing is antifreeze and/or water. The radiator doesn't have a hole in it, but it wont keep coolant. When you shut off the Bronco, water/coolant looks like it leaks from the waterpump area (my Bronco has a mechanical fan, not an electric one). I think that the water pump may be shot, and is leaking. Any ideas?

Bad Water Pump?

Well if you see the coolant leaking from the water pump casing then yes, you need to fix that. At the least, reseal the casing. But since you will have it off already, replace it. Once that is done, I would check your hoses for stiffness to make sure they arent old and havent softened up on you. With a new pump, the pressure may be enough to burst an old hose that held up with the lower pressure of the old pump. And since you are going to take all that apart, flush out your system and refill it.

Good Luck!

The pump can leak from the gasket area where it mates to the timing cover AND it can leak from the "weep hole" in the castiing on the under side of the pump. Usually, when they leak from this hole, the bearing is dead or dying and has casued the bearing seal to fail. The weep hole makes this apparent before the bearing completely chews itself into oblivion. Either way you are looking at the very least pulling the pump and replacing the gasket between the pump and timing cover. Worst case, you need a new water pump.

Does it only leak after the engine begins to cool? If so you may simply have a pressure related leak and its more likely to be a hose. Check all the clamps and the condition of the hoses near the clamps. It may be a simpler fix than you think.

Bad Water Pump?

I just replaced my water pump on my '92 Bronco/351 and I must warn you about the two outside bolts next to the water inlets. Both were frozen in the block.

If you can spray and heat sweat some lubricant into the holes and then slowly work the bolts back and forth a little at a time you can get them out. It takes patients but eventually you should be able to back them out.

Good luck.

Bad Water Pump?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to check out the water pump (to see whats going on with it) and I'm going to remove my transfer case (to see whats going on with it, too), I'm hoping this Sunday. If all goes as planned, I should get both of those problems solved or atleast figured out then. I'll check the hoses, too, might as well make sure they are in good shape also.
