Question Oil Cooler Question

Alright well I have been reading pleanty and not sure of a few things. I brought the turck in for an unrelated issue and while they had the computer hooked up they said my oil cooler is clogged and bad. ECT was 35degrees from EOT. I dont really trust this dealer these days but then again it may be true. I dont have gauges at this moment, and of course I dont have a computer at home to see for myself. I was told ECT was good but oil was way hot. I knoww its not super acurate but I used my temp gun and checked the top of the oil filter housing just out of curiosity since I have a billet oil cap because I have an Amsoil By-Pass and the temp was only like 12 degrees different from the coolant temp when temp reading with the gun on the radiator top and degass bottle. I know this isnt all that acurate but its a start. If it is infact a bad cooler would there be a tell tale sign. I have an ECT gauge just havent installed yet. Where would I tap into for that. I would buy a cheap oil temp gauge and where would I tap into for that. I would hook them up in a temporary state and hold the gauges in the truck. Would be cheaper to buy the EOT gauge then pay FORD 2 hours diag. If I go to do it myself how long should I plan hours wise. If I decide to just let somone do it because of down time what should be a fair price with parts or without(me getting the parts)... Thanks

Ryan

I would not be too doubtful of the dealers findings. If you have a stock 04 and have not had an egr cooler/oil cooler replacement yet, the odds are increasing on the dealer's findings. You might want to consider an Edge Insight to monitor these temps. Simple to install and less expensive than a 4 pack of gauges. Pricing on the parts is roughly:

Oil cooler replacement cartridge from Ed the parts Guy $220
Gaskets, oil, coolant, band aids, tylenol, beer for friends $250
Bulletproof Diesel EGR cooler $375
Edge Insight with optional egt probe $350
Gloshift fuel pressure gauge $100

Total $1295

Peace of mind....

Good Luck

Regards

Thanks for the info. How long should it take to change out the cooler in the drive way you think? Is the edge insight just a monitor. I already have an SCT and really dont want to chage. Really sucks if it is clogged and dissapointed. I have only ran Mobil Delvac 1 Synthetic with an Amsoil bypass since day 1 and only tow a 4k boat maybe 3 times a month. What causes this?

i think the tech that worked on my truck told me the coolant and the oil was suppose to be within 8 degrees of each other. this could be wrong, cheezit wold know more about the specifics..

i just put the second oil cooler and egr cooler in my 2004 f350. and since i assume your truck is also out of warranty (as mine is also) since 5yr is up, i would advise u to put in a egr delete. as cheezit said it cost me $1900 at dealer, and could have saved $288 if i had went with the delete kit. the egr cooler was $488 and could have bought a delete for $200 and never had to worry about the egr cooler again.

Thought I would chime in on the time in the driveway. I just replaced my oil cooler in the driveway and recovered both wiring harnesses (to help elaminate chaffing) removed radiator and cac to clean out bugs, and did a thorough cleaning under the hood and I started on Friday at about 5pm and fired it up at 4:30 am saturday. I already have the upgrades I need and I paid $408 at the dealer for the cooler and misc gaskets. I also spent about $100 at walmart for fresh oil, distilled water, brake cleaner, shoptowels, and whatever else I cannot remember now. I like to remove the fan, radiator, innercooler, and the grill so I can stand on the stabilizer bar directly in front of the engine (or for some things I could stand on the ground with my legs in between the steering linkage). I think the extra work (which isn't much) is well worth not leaning over. I also remove the grill just to keep it protected. I weigh about 170 and the linkage seemed to handle the weight fine. However there is two tools that I would suggest having. The fan clutch tool and the trans cooler line disconnect tool(from the radiator). I have done this job before without them, but after doing it with them, I'll make sure I always have them. The next best tool is the radkitusa (or something) from snap on. That thing is awesome. I also have another peice of info (which those of you with common sense already do), I finally set up a table at the front of the truck. For years I have been working with my tools either on the floor or in my big toolbox or scattered around the engine compartment. It was very nice to have all the tools needed right there. I dont know if you could tell but I am an avid diy'er. I dunno if this helps anyone but DANG it feels good to have the job done, on my schedule.

Ok well heres another question and my concerns. I do want my truck to last forever but I had not brought the truck in for unrelated issues and never found out about this varience in temps I wouldnt have none. What would be the result. I know it should be done. But in these times its alot of money since I just droped 1k on an egr by-pass and exhaust. I dont really have $1900 plus $400 for edge insigt to just throw at the truck. Would probably have to do it myself in the drive way. So how long would I have not know what would have been the result of this going bad. I am just thinking about how many thousands and thousands of trucks out there especially city/govt/state without gauges. What do they do...Do you think I should try and tackle this in the drive way?

It is hard to say how long it would take anyone, not knowing their skill level. It is doable in the driveway.

run6.0run gave you his tips. I have some instructions that can help a lot. If you want them, PM me with your email address.

The consequences of a failed EGR cooler can be pretty costly - if you hydrolock your engine and bend some things.

Sorry about posting about the repair time stuff run6.0 must have posted while I was typing and I do aprpeciate his insite. I must really be geting confused. The oil cooler can cause consequences in relation to EGR cooler. I mentioned before that I just did an EGR by-pass. Tech told me he weleded shut exhaust inlet, coolant still goes through. Am I right in thinking this is the same EGR cooler? If not I am getting confused. I was under the imprestion there is an EGR Cooler(coolant and exhaust, which I by-passed) and Oil Cooler(coolant and Oil) Correct or am I going crazier and need to sit down with a cocktail. My skill level I think is good. Did injectors no problem. Just dont want to open something someone was going to say "dude just take it in you dont want to deal with that" Working for a diesel engine company and being "in the Biz" I can get the oil cooler and gaskets from ford for just above cost so that works. Bismic I am going to PM you now thank you for any help yo can give...

well I just bought the Edge CS the new black one. Looks cool. Didnt want to go with the bigger touch screen 300 was with free shipping. Didnt have a mount in stock but comes with the window mount. Almost like that better so I can put it away when not using it. Will be using it most of the time though I think. Any ways looking foward to seeing what kinda ECT and EOT I actually have.

This is the same cooler - sorry, I did not catch that you had an EGR system delete. You should be OK. If the coolant still flows throeugh the EGR cooler, then it can still leak .... but the chances are a lot lower since you have the hot gasses blocked off.
