The 460 was used in heavy duty applications because of it's ability to tow quite a bit at highway speeds, and plus it was a very durable engine.

As far as getting rid of the 7.3, that was something that had to be done, not just to keep up with the Dmax. Emissions requirememnts forced Ford to get a new diesel. Also, I reckon that you're talking about the 500 or so confirmed 6.0s that were buybacks or lemons when you're talking about the ones having strokes? I guess the Duramax passes them, unless it's loaded, because the IFS Duramax truck can't tow as much as the new Ford. I don't even think that the Duramax can pass the PSD unloaded either, though, I'll have to find that test again.
FI 460s are "new" the old original 460s had these old fuel delivery devices called carburetors, Ford had to "detune" the great big block back in the day (around 1978) to meet the then new emission requirements. So far as the 460 breaking down often, I'm sure some guys have had this experience, but in the rest of the world those old mills just keep going. I've seen rebuilt 460s in old F150s pull Big horse trailers, going up and down hills at full highway speeds in New Mexico, around 3000 feet above sea level. Thank God for the Big Block Ford! I'm always a little confused regarding "it does it all" type vehicle, drag racer, trailer towing machine, family mover, etc., my thought has always been if you want to street race, build a light street racer, if you want to do truck stuff, get a pile of low end torque, and a good Ford rear-end-a 460 works well in this role.

I've owned all three-worst piece of crap I've ever owned was a Ford truck,(2 of them are tied for that spot)
But-the best truck I've ever owned yet is also a Ford!

All have pro's and cons to them...I'm pretty handy at times with repairs-but certainly NO mechanic...lol.
All I have to offer are real life experiences with all three.

As far as the 460-454 thing goes...lol...I'm bustin ***** bro.

I've never owned either-just lookin to stir the pot a bit...lol.

I re-read my post and realized I prolly offended some fellow truckers with my sarcastic remarks bout the PSD "having a stroke"-my apologies-It's really NOT a funny thing to have happen when you buy a new truck you trust in.

As far as the Duramax goes-I don't like the idea behind it either-but they WERE desperate for something-anything!
Ford already had the #1 diesel in America-the 7.3 PSD-why change it?
I'm sure it'll turn out to be a fine motor in the long haul, but how many guys are going to experience the same/more problems in the future till all the quirks are worked out?

Sure I can understand a few motors come out just plain bad from the get go-but this seems pretty common from what I've read so far.
I'm not sure I really want one now...
Where's all the pre market testing gone to?
As far as the Cummins goes-from what I've read around -you are right-but at least I know it's proven itself time and again in reliability, and it's still the same ole motor,so if I were in the market for a new diesel-it'd prolly be the way to go-as the duramax still hasint proven anything to me yet-that thing needs double the caution before you buy time because of the aluminum heads they utilize.

Back on to the 460 vs 454 thing, -thanks dude you taught me something....lol.

Regards.

I love the old school trolling dating back in 2003 this is amazing.
