i kno this is a ford sight and truthfuly say im a chevy man but i had to get in on this convo its WAY too ONE sided but faciast ford people.....yes the 454 is more of a racing engine hell thats what its designed for the 460 desgined as a truck engine so in a way...un-fair comparrison???i am accually having a disscusion about this with a freind on msn now cause he has the ford 460 in a light duty f-250 77' and i have a 76 all time 4wd gmc sierra grande 400 6.6l i love the way the power feels of the 460...but then again my carborator is shot all to hell due to running on propane for some years so when i get a new one we will see what it feels like but its nothing more than feel really.....the 400 and 460 is accually a better comparrison than the 454 and 460 because although the 400 is a small block its stroke is only .10 shorter the the 460...."A 400 cu in (6.6 L) small-block was introduced in 1970 and produced for 10 years. It had a 4.125-inch (104.8 mm) bore and a 3.75-inch (95.3 mm) stroke."just about the same stroke.....i kno i kno ur like...arg this smacktarded chevy guy....but what can i say never have had a probly with a chevy sides my carb but thats my own fault the 400 runs 3600 rpm the 77 460...a whopping 930-960 rpm....whoah whoah is that right????...yes it is.....and on that DIESEL coment above u r a DISGRACE to diesels! ford did not never has and never will lead in diesel engines! im not gonna explain u can find the facts urself and ive driven every power stroke and ive driven the durmax and then the 6.5L and obviously u know what i go for...but then again i was pulling 10,000-15,000 pound loads so go figure i guess most of you guys simply own the trucks for hauling your grass...

The only GM engine comparable to the 460 Ford in truck applications is the impressive 472/500 Cadillac engines which GM never put in trucks unfortunately. I know those Cadillac engines make a great heavy duty pulling engine.

then you obviously dont know much about gm engines...probly never had to work on one never the less really drive one other then a 350 at best....the gasers r on the low end for pulling but great for racing the diesels great for pulling...and only diesel ever raced with is a cummins really...unless you go foreign with a benz...but off topic...ford is good but has too many issues and is way over rated and under powered but with some tune ups the gasers can be nice....the diesels...there is no hope left for them with out adding a twin turbo....but there was never hope to begin with....

You are wrong 6.6 liter, cause I have had a GM Cadillac 472 and been around a 500 Cadillac and those along with the 460 Ford are much better light truck engines than the light truck cummins or 350 Chevy, all of which we have used at this farm, you must be looking for a argument only.

Are you serious comparing the 400 small block to the ford 460? The Chevy 400 has problems with the main webbing and cooling issues. I far rather have a 350 based. If you really wanted to stay GM, the olds 403 or the Pontiac 400 are far superior IMO.

are those issues youve experienced yourself or read online? cause i have no issue accually i have heating it up so it wont die issues not cooling it down...im not looking for a arguement im just sick of people going "oh ford 460 huge big block engine has soooo much power" when in reality its good sure but it a bunch of crap...and diesel wise....the cummins is good but starting too loose its rep after the 425 HP duramax came out anyways thats what our stock duramax dyno'ed at....i mean christ what the pwoerstroke 7.3L? my uncle uses the 90's ones at the co-op for tanks he says its a alright truck for empty tanks but when full its worthless no horse or torque which is precisley why the company bought 4 2006 duramax's....the reason a cummins is so powerful because un-like a v8 where one pistons goes at a time.....3 pistons go at a time providing great surges of power...even if it is 5.9l although i hear the new cummins is alright ...but thats only heard havent driven or worked on oone yet so i wont say anything about it,...and powerstrokes are bitches too fix....enough said not gonna say any more whether you like it or not ford is over rated....engines on gas are decent big blocks small blocks fail and diesels fail....enough said!

Excuse me. I don't mean to interrupt the fun here, but would like to ask you a question or two about the above.

What the hell are you talking about?

Have you ever seen how an engine works?

Do you really think 3 cylinders fire all at once in an in-line six?

6's fire every 120 degrees of crank rotation. 3 per revolution. (save the Detroit example, it's a two-stroke and it fires all cylinders every rotation)

90 degree 8's, or straight 8's, fire every 90 degrees. 4 per revolution.

The Cummins advantage is the result of other magic, and is in spite of it's cylinder count and displacement disadvantage. Think boost, perhaps.

6.6liter,

WHAT THE HELL? You sign up as a new user to revive a thread that is 5 YEARS OLD only to act like you are right and everyone here doesn't know anything??

You are either a 12 year old, or someone who is just trying to cause a ruckus as a joke. If it's the latter, just leave. I'm leaning towards the 12 year old guess though.

the reason a cummins is so powerful because un-like a v8 where one pistons goes at a time.....3 pistons go at a time providing great surges of power
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I'm not even going to touch this... ok, i can't resist - so if a v-8 engine fired 4 cylinders at once would it make even more torque than your I6 doing 3 at a time!?!?!?!?

6.6liter just leave man, it'll make things easier on you...

Honestly, the 351W could dominate the 454. The 454 is so much hype. It is annoying. The 460 is a beast to say the least. It is one of Ford's best truck motors. I wish I could get my hands on one.

yah your right....thats a typical 6 but the cummin aint no typical 6 it accually DOES fire 3 ALMOST at once but its close enough that all 3 are normally considered fired at "once" and i didnt say any thing about a v8 firing at once i know that each piston yada dada.....wer the hell does that come from? and pointing fingers saying i sound like a 12 year old? you sound like your no more then 15....anyways enough is enough....get fordo ut of your head just cause they arnt broke....sad GM has idiot managers that allow that too happen too them...but ford isnt what it used to be.....its "sportscars"are whipped by chevy the trucks are whipped by dodge and chevy not too spiffy on the dodge sports cars although the viper whips fords gt and mustang not sure how the charger/challengers perform they seem a wee bit heavy so i would suspect they wouldnt be the best for speed other than show which is what the mustang is....anyways back to 460 and truck what nots.....460 like i said is a decent truck engine but eats gas by the barrel and isnt what it used too be.....so stop being diehard ford fans and get out and see the REAL world...

Well, I kinda have to agree with the twelve year old remark. Its understandable given your horrible spelling and grammar. Seriously kid/guy/person with nothing better to do, what do you think your gonna accomplish talkin up Cheap, Hardley Efficient, Virtually Runs On Luck Every Time on a Ford website?
