This is a great thread as I am in the middle of trying to decide between a 460 Dually or a 454 dually to pull a 5000lb. trailer for work. By the way I haven't been able to find a site that deals with the Chevy dually exclusivly so any more info you guys can spare would be greatly appreciated.

Just my 2 cents, I have have to agree with Seth (Proliator) Put 5K in a 454 and see what kind of HP and Torque you get on Pump Gas, and then do the same with the 460 and watch the #s Jump up..Some guys I know are easly making 700 to 800HP streetable HP with 460s...On pump gas...and a single 4V...
My old 454 has been a great truck and is certainly not gutless plus gets 12 mpg running empty. Having said that - it is no match for my 6.0 diesel and neither is a 460. On the old big block trucks it boils down to condition and personal preference and either one of them is OK if it is a good one, however, if you are serious about pulling - get a diesel.
Don't turn this into a diesel vs gasser thread. This is between the 460 and 454. No one gives a rats butt about diesel here. There are numerous gas vs diesel threads out there already.

Just to clarify I am looking at 96-99 for both probably. I am upgrading from a 2K F150 4.6 manual which would pull 5K eventhough it is beyond it's rating but it would be too much of a strain. Thanks for all the input.
...although I haven't ever driven a truck with a 454, my '93 F30 with a 460, AT, does have plenty of power. We use it to haul two of our horses to the county fair (one is a Clydesdale), we also put a high-wheeled wooded horse cart in the pickup bed, plus all of the associated harnesses and tack in the trailer. The truck has no problems pulling up the hills in North East Ohio.
Mine's not stock for the Bronco but is made of stock parts. It has 71 CJ exhost manifolds, 69 Thunderjet heads and 73 2bolt main block and stock cam with 69 timing gear set, and 78 Duraspark ignition. The gears on Bronco are 4.88s and It's got serious grunt. I do plan on changing to a Stelth intake manifold to do away with the up hill design to the intake ports. http://users.boardnation.com/~katman...x.php?board=33
For info on early 385's.
