tilt column u-joint

I have some slop in the u-joint inside the column where it tilts. Is this joint available? Anybody ever change one?
Thanks.

Not sure if you have done this. Have you allready trided to tighten it up? Mine was like that and I tightened up the fasteners and it's perfect now.

Yep, there is a single nut & bolt in the center of the shaft that was loose on mine. Made a big difference after it was tight. Check out this link, I posted a breakdown of the tilt columns and some pics.

I had major slop in my 79 tilt...there are a couple access holes underside of column and I was able to fit the right allen wrench in there to tighten them up. Made it like new! I did have to cut off the length of the allen wrench head so it was just about 3/8 inch long to fit it up there, though.

(Not sure if I could have or should have disassembled the whole thing but this worked out fine.)

I changed my steering wheel and could see that the actual u-joint in the column was sloppy by looking in there and moving the shaft while my wheel was off. I've got about 1/4 of (rotational) play in the wheel because of it. The column itself is tight where it pivots.
I'll look at all the suggestions you guys gave me, but I'm pretty sure I need to find a new u-joint. Anybody know where I can get one if I need to?
Thanks for all the tips guys!

You don't replace that U-joint, you replace the worn out nut with a new one and it tightens it up. The nut in my Bronco was so worn out it would not stay tight.

I'm glad I found this.
Thanks for the link, ranger429, good info.

I just went through this in my 66 F100 that I have a 78-79 tilt column in.
I had had slack for years & finally got around to looking into it when I replaced my shift collar this week.

If any of you guys get a minute look at my thread, I promise you'll get a kick out of it, just read all the way through.

Wow, that is an interesting read.

Glad the link helped you out.

Was it the small nut in the center of the "mysterious" U-joint/wobble joint?

78/79 Bronco and truck Tilt column shaft universal

Did anyone ever find a source for the shaft universal parts? Specifically the small square parts that the bolt goes through to attach the short upper shaft to the long lower shaft. The one I’m working on now had the bolt loose long enough the parts that squeezed the ***** in the shaft wallowed out enough that even when the bolt’s tight there’s still movement. Surely those would be considered consumable and replacements would have been available.

374279 tilt joint

Looking at the exploded view provided, the 374279 looks like the universal joint, how does that convert to a Ford part number? Being a number is shown within the bracket of the shaft I’m guessing that means it’s an available sub component.
