Do it all the time in my sister's ranger. Not sure if your truck runs the same setup though.

The ranger is all mechanical, so as long as your hubs are in the locked position, the engagement is undetectable.

Dad's gmc used to have that silly shift on the fly setup that uses a side axle disconnect via some unreliable thermal expander. I since bypassed that disconnect because it kept failing and aren't cheap to replace. Now the front axles are always connected and he can shift on the fly when ever he likes (no more delay either).

Shifting between high and low range is something that can't be done at speed though.

EDIT: total crap I just put here since it assumes matching axle ratios for front and rear ends

if the gears are the same in the front as they are in the rear then you can shift on the fly but if they are different front to rear wont that screw with the tc?

If you have 4.10 gears in the front axle and 3.55 in the rear, you would never get it in gear while rolling.

And you would also most likely be replacing lots of U joints and drive shafts when you drove in 4x4.

Front tires rotate 70 miles every hour at 2200 RPM with 4.10 gears in overdrive.
Rear tires rotate 80 miles every hour at 2200 RPM with 3.55 gears in overdrive.

I agree running 70 MPH at 2200 RPM should have done better than 11.7 MPG.

Just averaged 18 MPG with my Stroke from here to KC and back, 4.10 gears and an E4OD running the speed limit all the way.

Most of it 65 MPH, but a good bit of 70 MPH.

he can head to the local salvage yard, grab a $150-$200 rear axle w/3:55's,buy some new U-bolts and be done in an afternoon for well under $250 easy.
heck, save even more than salvage yard prices, and get a srw 3.55's from private party.(though the 30 day warranty is nice.)

your DRW rear is roughly $350-$900 (depending on the yard) and then you'd need to pay for gears and installation in the front axle.-likely just be the same, possibly cheaper to have both axle gears swapped....roughly around a grand.
what i would do,is to try and find someone to swap rear axles....'92-97 DRW 3.55 cab and chassis only!! no other year due to vss,and not pickup drw cus it wont fit...you did verify its a C&C right?
thats "kinda" a small window to find lol,to top it off,you need to find a guy with same thing, who is looking for 4.10's who now has 3.55's....i kinda wounder if ford even bothered putting 3.55's in the C&C DRW trucks anyway.
long story short, your stuck paying for gear installation front and rear lol.
well if I had a million dollars maybe I would go through this, but looks like I'm gonna suck it up with the 4:10, people sure did hate me today when I was doing 60mph on the 2 lane nys thruway LOL

Oh boy, major brain fart. Didn't realize it was in the context of running different gear ratios for front or rear.

You're right, I'm wrong.
