Just got back from a camping trip and checked my MPG. I tow a 8500 lb fifth wheel. I never got less than 10 mpg. This time I got 8mpg. Same trip we took a couple of times with 10+ mpg. My ? is This tank was Sunoco about 1/4 tank and a place called fastrack. Fastrack uses 10% ethonol and I know Sunoco uses ethonol. I didn't have time to go to kwikfill the gas I use most of the time. Will my mpg change with the gas with ethonol blend?
I found that the 10% ethanol will kill my gas fuel economy. I travel to a deer camp about 200 miles away about once a month.... usually I get about 14mpg on the way up and home on a 10% mix. I have found a station up there that does not use the ethanol mix so for the last 3 trips I have filled with non-mixed gas and have seen 19-20mpg on a ride that i used to get 14mpg
Yes, reformulated or oxygenated gas utilizing ETOH will lower your gas mileage. My rig gets close to 14mpg mixed driving on 100% unleaded and 12ish with 10%ETOH. E85 is worse...I get around 9.5mpg.
Forget the ethanol mixture----------your gas mileage will go down! Use Shell, Exxon, or one of the other local brands that do not blend in ethanol. My Explorer went down over 2 mpg with the ethanol mixture; almost the same results with the F-150.
He might not have a choice. If you're in or traveling thru a large city or an adjacent county to a large city chances are that reformulated/oxygenated gas is required by law. Might as well get used to it...if I recall correctly the EPA has mandated that all gas be reformulated to meet certain standards within the next couple of years. That means adding ETOH b/c they can't use MTBE anymore.
Down here in Houston it's been the norm for years now...
I had the same problem on my trip to Gulf Shores once I hit Tennessee I could only find gas with 10% moon shine in it. My mileage didn't go back up until I got some real fuel. The corn liquor runs better in me then my truck.

How true! Ethanol is worse than the MTBE used previously in NJ. On the same trip I would get 21 mpg on a 60/40 mixture of real gas and MTBE gas, 16 on MTBE gas and at best 14 mpg using 10% ethanol gas. It's another government boondoggle. Ethanol in gas actually increases the NOX emissions over 100% real gas. Oxygenated fuels were originally conceived as an aid for the emissions of cold running carburetor equipped vehicles until they warmed up. Today's vehicle use FI and computers to insure minimum emissions under all circumstances. How many carburetor equipped cars are on the roads today, well maybe except in Calif and the Southwest, even there not a large percentage. In the Midwest and the Northeast they all rusted to nothing many years ago, except the rare grandma or collectors car. In today's world of super expensive fuel prices it's a crime our government punishes it citizens on the advice of advocacy groups and special interests groups, both who donate money to our politicians.
Mabey that explains why I get about 1 mpg more running a programmer on 91 octane tune. Normally I get about 12-13 w/ mixed driving, but 13-14 running premium and the programmer. I'm not suggesting everyone do this, but I have been observing this due to the fact that I hand calculate my mpg at every fill up. For most vehicles, ethanol robs mpg's. Today's engines run so much cleaner than ever before, I wonder if ethenol is even needed.
I've used all three grades through all 3 modes on my edge...I always seem to get the same crappy mileage no matter what. I've dusted off my Excel spreadsheet and have started another "study" into mpg and mods. Stay tuned.
