Lightbulb What kind of transmission is this that i have?

Here is the deal, I'm having a hard time getting the rear seal for this tranny i picked up at the junk yard, i pulled it outta a 89 Truck, didn't really catch if it was a 150 or 250 etc, but it was behind a EFI Inline 6 i know for sure. It was a half off day and i grabbed it at the last second so i was in a hurry. I was under the impression it was a M5OD R2 but now i'm pondering if i am wrong.

Besides the first reason of not being able to find the rear seal as shown in the first pic i also found the only numbers i can find is the white sticker (last picture) which if i read correctly it's a 97 transmission but cant figure out the rest, also not in the pics but punched in below the reverse plug is F8, which i would think maybe it was in a 98? The last picture is of the seal that was on the rear, but at the auto store it was a total different seal then this with no flange on the back and was smaller and it was the same part at 4 different stores i went to as well.

I can't find any other info on this and don't know where else to turn, any help i would greatly appreciate. At least if i can start with what kinda of tranny this is i can go from there. If it is a 97 i know for sure that rear housing was changed to accept the cable speedometer. But outta what tranny it came from is my question as well?

Thanks!

And Here is the PICS!

I would say, yes, you have an M5R2.

Mazda Ford M5R2 Standard ( Manual ) Transmission Parts and Diagram

It sounds kind of silly, but maybe try to call the local Ford Parts House and see if you have any better luck.

I found this number on a PDF document from Six States Dist. See if the parts house can cross-ref this number (710415 National) for you so you can look at it. Just another shot in the dark.

Thanks AK

Thats the part number all 4 local auto stores have but that seal is nothing like that one i have in the first pic, it was smaller and had no rubber yoke cover on the back like this one has.

When Oriellys auto parts cross referenced the seal part number it came up as a National 38x60x10 Industrial seal, which is not the part for M5R2 nor the ZF of that year. :-(

Am i right about the year this tranny was made? i'm shooting at 97 or 98 and maybe they took the back housing off another trans and it fitted to this one so now i have a Frankenstein trans on my hand, just my luck lol

If you look ar this one, it has the larger seal. It looks like a lot of information here, but this is a Thunderbire Super Coupe website. That may be the tailshaft housing you have.

Measure it, are these the measurements???
Seal I.D. : 1.875"
Seal O.D. : 2.754"
Seal Width : 1.37"

Seals usually have numbers on them, you may have to look inside the slip seal at the actual seal to find it.

-Enjoy

1990/2002 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog / Transmission ID Chart / Section 70, Page 7 / Parts List #109:

F75A-AA = 1997/98 F150/250 2WD Mazda R2 (what the parts catalog calls it) 5 Speed Transmission.

E8TZ7052C .. Output Shaft Seal / Available from Ford.

MSRP: $28.95 // FTE Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $20.84.

According to Ed's website, this seal fits from 1988 thru today, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one...at a Ford Dealer, that is.

No dealer in San Antonio has any, if you order it: The Ford parts depot in Houston has 13, the parts depot in Fort Worth has 18. And...

SAM PACK'S 5 STAR FORD in Farmers Branch TX has THREE = 972-242-5117.

5 STAR FORD in North Richland Hills TX has TWO = 817-498-8838.

GULLO FORD-MERCURY in Conroe TX has TWO = 936-442-4511.

TOMMIE VAUGHN MOTORS in Houston TX has ONE = 713-802-6667.

Ok First of all thank you very much for all the info.

From all this i have come to of figured out that

1. My trans is from a 98 truck
2. my top shifter part is from a late 80's or early 90's M5OD
3. my tail shaft housing is from late 80's to early 90's era?
4. The seal they have in stock at the auto stores is not what came on these.

AK, yes that does look like mine but that tail shaft has the shifter located on it so not the same as what i have here. But those pics on that site helped me solve another problem with my shifter, So you rock for helping me what i didn't ask about! lol

Hagen,
Seal I.D. : 1.456"
Seal O.D. : 2.362"
Seal Width : 1.181"
What are the measurements you gave me from? Cause mine are different.

Number Dummy,
I cross referenced that part number with a store here and they have them in stock for 8$ and picture does look just like what i have. What i don't get is why this seal has a model # AH2245F and when they cross referenced that it pulled up something else. I'm under the impression my DS will slip right into this trans, maybe i'm wrong?

This also answered my question in the other Thread about the extra play in the shifter going past 4th gear, i noticed while looking through pics on google that the two shift forks on mine are thinner then on the newer ones, Kinda sucks cause this keeps popping out my center metal plug up front.

What can i do to correct this problem? I'm sure i need that center plug up front to be in there, I'm actually thinking bout going back to the junk yard and getting an actual trans that was for the 87 to 93 era though i like the fact i got a newer trans but hate the extra give in the shifter.

Mine

What I found online of a newer one.

With the F75A-AA trans code, the seal is E8TZ7052C

There is another: E8TZ7052E but it was not used with F75A-AA.

No local to San Antonio FoMoCo Dealer has any, but there are about 8 dealers in TX that have it...and it's available from Ford.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I first looked at the pic...I thought the seal looked exactly like this one: D9BZ7052A / I sold a lot of these seals over the years.

Ford used this seal on some 3 speed manuals and with the RUG/RTS TS-OD single rail 4 speed O/D's used from 1978 thru 1989 (mebbe later-I forget), and prolly other transmissions.

It's still available from Ford, and...

NORTH PARK L/M in San Antonio has ONE = 210-341-8841.

EDIT** Also Number dummy keep in mind that my tail housing on the trans is not the one that came stock on it, it was modified to fit into a 89 so that the speedometer cable could be used. This is why i'm confused because i can't really go by the F75A-AA for the rear seal due to the fact that tail housing is different! lol oh dear god FML i tell ya. On top of this fact the shifter top is different to so the shifter is further forward unlike on a 98 truck.

I wish i could know what exactly this tail housing is off, then this would free up a lot of confusing, so if i could ask what other transmissions could a M5ODR2 tail housing fit on?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I'm about to go up there and check it out, I measured my drive shaft yoke diameter on my current truck and it seems it would fit in this current seal but i'll see how close the one of the part number you gave me is. I'm just wondering if maybe they had a different DS then the one i have and thats why the got a different seal?

I'm currently trying to find the part number for the oil baffle that sits behind the front seal in the trans.

This is the info off of the 88 F-250 in the junkyard. It had the same tailshaft as you. Maybe it will help you.

Hmm not good at decoding that, but if it was a 88 you saw this same tail housing on then sweet, If number dummy can hook me up with a part number for a 88 or 89 rear seal for a M5OD R2 then that be awesome!

Though i'm looking at your label pic and can't help but notice the C 6 at the very bottom right corner, i haven't referenced mine and can't make out the blue lettering so i'll check that out tomorrow on mine and put one and one together and such, right now i'm bout to pass out so this all may not make sense FYI Lol

Question

Thank You Number Dummy,

I've learned the auto stores have the wrong part number for this trans and the previous owners of this trans probably just found a seal close to what was on there i guess lol.

Again you are a true life saver with you knowledge.

Now i just gotta figure out how to keep that front plug from popping out when it overshoots in 4th gear. I'm thinking about welding all three plugs to the trans so they can't pop out. what ya'll think?

If i'm correct this is the only shift tower that has the shifter located in the center. Any newer one that has thicker shift rod arms would have the shifter towards the back right?

UPDATE! : According to this info they did change in the forks in 96, now with what info i have here and by first todays pics of his 94 tranny knowledge the body style was the same till 97 i would have to say i'm looking for a shift cover from a 96 year model, idk can anyone confirm this info? I would be so happy yet sad that i'm looking for a needle in a hay stack at a junk yard lol ekkk

Shift Forks:
REF # Part # Description
M5R2-23 M5R2 1-2 Shift Fork, 88-95
M5R2-23AB M5R2 1-2 Shift Fork, 96-on
M5R2-23A M5R2 3-4 Shift Fork, 88-95
M5R2-23AA M5R2 3-4 Shift Fork, 96-on

Thanks!
