Yep, I've double checked wires, and double checked the cap to make sure I had the firing order right and everything. 15's too young, 36's too old, 24's just right.
By the way, I have another sign of weak spark. The engine does absolutely nothing when you press the accelerator pedal. When it ran it'd only run aight with the pedal depressed. The more air that's compressed the harder for spark to fire. The plugs even look carbon filed, yea time for them to go. Bye bye Motorcrafts.
And I've had the engine sounding way worse than it does now. I'm sure I was 180 out earlier haha.
Yea, that technique looks great on paper, but once I get close, I'll be darned if I'll take it for anther spin if (when) I miss!
Yea lol if I miss it I miss it, gone just a tad to far (mostly caused by helper on key) I'll bring it back around again. For the most part I wait until I feel it just start building pressure and stop there with the starter, bring it up the remainder by hand.
OK forget about the balencer for now , just drop the dist in with the rotor pointing at the # 1 wire while its at TDC on the comp stroke then start it up & set the timing by ear , turn the dist one way or the other till it runs good , a few degrees either way won't mater , if it dosn't want to run after that then you have another problem ...well i guess it won't be at TDC because of the balencer problem , but as long as the piston is at the top on the comp stroke your good ....Lew
Well, D.D.! We're now on Pg. 4! Two things immediately come to mind, I think you should know!
1.At pg. 4, you are morally obligated to tell us if this ends up being some silly basic mistake on your part! (that's ok, happens to everybody)
2. Members within a 100 mi. radius, may take this opportunity to come by & introduce themselves............as they beat you w/ a dipstick!!! (Joke) Not really, they'll probably use the timing light!
I think this one will end up being a basic mistake. I'll be yanking these plugs in a second and I'm pretty sure she'll run like a champ then. That'll mean that's all I had to do like 2 days ago when I dropped the first remand dizzy in and finally got it running haha. By the time it ran I had cranked it over so much I just had to have soaked the plugs.
Changing the plugs at this point certenly wouldn't hurt, you're the one can see what they look like/smell the fuel.
If you have no other issue doing as lew stated you should have a working model, just no abilitly to set the timing with a light, keep in mind you could use a vacuum gauge.
If you're not sure of your ability to time it by ear, picking up a inexpensive vac gauge with the plugs wouldn't be a bad way to go. Just be sure and buy one pre marked for early / late ignition timing right on the face to reduce any foreseeable guess work on your part with it.
I already have a vac gauge, but I don't believe it has timing stuff on it. I yanked all 6 plugs just now. Yea, they're all carbon fouled. Running up to Napa to see if I can get some Autolites real quick.
Aight guys here's the deal. She's running. New plugs she runs, for a lot longer. But I've had a continuing problem with my truck in that it only runs good at or above 1000RPMS.
I just cranked it up for the first time with the new plugs. It ran fine till the idle wanted to drop then she started bucking like it was gonna die, but it never died. I turned off the key.
I know the timing can't be dead on. I've never had this truck idle below 1K. I wonder if I can move the dizzy as it's bucking and get it to smooth out. It's raining so I'll be trying tomorrow I guess.

I've turned it over by hand the entire time. I watch the valves through the oil cap, and it's so bright out here I can watch the piston rise through the spark plug hole.
The piston also rises to the top on the exhaust stroke.
Here's a way to check how far off your HB is. Put your thumb over the nuber one plug hole. Dont worry about watching your rockers. crank the engine by hand until you feel the compression. Continue cranking until your timing marks line up.
If for some reason your still feelling compression, then line the dizzy up, start it, and chalk it up as a lessoned learned.
I'm way past that now nashaj. Truck's running and running nicely. I just have to time it, but can't since it's raining like crazy out here.

Lew, ever since I bought this truck no other man or woman has worked on it except me. Maybe I'd have it on the road sooner if I had help, and sometimes I wanted help and couldn't get it, but I'm on the home stretch now.
I wouldn't think of having someone make the drive when I'll have it running like a champ by the time they arrive haha. This forum has been more than enough help and will continue to be. Without coming here I'd get the truck running but would probably have never realized the balancer still needs to be replaced.
