I like the simplicity and endurance of my idi's, but am trying hard to talk my son out of his cummins(up to 2500 so far). I am not sure if it would wind up in my dually or crew though.

its not a factory turbo engine BUT my spare motor is. why the valves? if they are the same size, whats the advantage? and the turbo engine oil cooler is the same as my non turbo cooler so again, whats the advantage? not trying to be a ***, just curious. i know nothing about the 6.9 except its the thicker wall father of the 7.3

Also don't forget that the 6.9 uses 7/16 bolts, and the 7.3 uses 1/2 bolts for the head. The heads were also a bit different, but only slightly I think the water jackets or somethings.

but you can put the 6.9 heads on the 7.3 just gotta open up the head bolt holes.

If you do that, the stock bolts will not work. You will need a custom stud or head bolt length but other then that it could work.

Also be aware that custom bolts can be quite expensive. The engine machine shop that did the work for me had a set of 6.9 heads in there for probably a few years that they don't know what to do with now. I considered using them for my build but unfortunately the hole was too large and he advised against it with 6.9 sized studs and washers.

Oreo - if I remember correctly the 7.3 turbo valves were inconel valves and the 7.3 turbo oil cooler had a higher "fin per inch"rating for slightly increased thermal transfer efficiency in the same package size.

swooshcmk has it right, the turbo oil cooler has more fins per inch and should cool the oil better.

Also the inconel alloy exhaust valves take the heat better.

Glow plug sheaths, pyrometer thermocouple sheaths, turbo fins and turbo exhaust valves are a few of the places you find inconel used.

Not trying to hijack the thread just wondering would it be worthwhile to ceramic coat those valves or would there be little gains? I'm taking notes on this stuff because I need to either rebuild or replace my motor.
